HELP!! CARBURATION PROBLEM!!!!Need help ASAP!!!

i was driving my truck tonight and all of a sudden it starts trying to stall out so i drop it down a gear to get the revs up and after i turned off the main road i look back and it is blowing lots of black smoke out the pipes then i stop and it stalls out and i have a hard time getting it to start again and rev it up to 4000 and it is running really rough so i have to put it in drive at high rpm to keep it from stalling out. what is wrong???
sorry for the long post. i just need to try to get is fixed tonight because i need it to get to school tomorrow and it is my only ride.

My blazer did that a couple of day's ago when I got arco gas (which I never buy) and as soon as I ran out the old gas and put in new gas it ran normal.. Sound's like you got a rich condition though..

black smoke is running to rich, either stuck choke or a stuck float.

every time i fill up i get gas at the same station and at the same pump every time. i filled it up full a few days ago and have already used half the tank so far without any problems until now so i don't think the fuel is the problem.

If your float is stuck you can try tapping the carb gently with the handle end of a screwdriver. That can help if a float is stuck.

the problem was a stuck float. i tapped on the carb and the problem went away. what would cause the float to stick in the first place and how can i prevent it from happening again.

Likely the cause of the " stuck float" (causing way too much gas) is just one tiny wee speck o' dirt, somewhere in the carb that just loves to get in with the float valve and seat..(causing you way too much aggravation)..
Sooo. to prevent this, as long as you're comfortable with the procedure, is to take apart the carb, and minimum, clean out anywhere where gas is coming into the carb and going into the float chamber..Do yorself a favor and get the kit and rebuild the carb..

Other culprit for dirt is old fuel filters..

And last but not least, a float that don't float no mo'...I've heard of this, but never actually seen it...Pull your float, toss it in a jar of gas..If it floats, it likely works..With old copper hollow floats, I guess some of them could spring a leak, but....

Hope this helps..

It may have been just some dirt in the fuel that became lodged between the needle and seat (the float controls this valve) causing it to run rich. To avoid this problem in the future, make sure you have a good fuel filter installed in the feed line either before or after the fuel pump. You may also want to check the condition of your fuel tank and pickup tube/sending unit sock as it may be corroded and sending trash to your carb.

I'd also check for a vacumn leak. Just went through that on my 82. The vacumn hose to the tranny decided to give out on me.

it is an edelbrock and i'm running a filter right before the carb. it ran alright today so i probably won't worry about it unless it does it again.
