Speakers: Kicks vs. Doors
I'm getting ready to tear down and rebuild my truck into a nice daily driver, and am at the point where I need to decide what to replace the radio with. I will be putting a really nice CD/MP3 deck in, and will amp all speakers rather than use the deck amp, but I haven't decided where to put the speakers. The kick panels seem to be good for a number of reasons:
1. No real cutting involved 2. Good place for imaging But also bad: 1. Easy to kick 2. Potential problem with E-brake, dimmer and side vents (maybe able to modify) Then we have the positives of the doors: 1. Bigger speaker (6x9) will fit 2. Kept away from feet 3. No interference with any vehicle functions Again, also some negatives: 1. Have to cut (not a big deal to me though) 2. Not so good imaging 3. Risk of getting wet (I will build a rain hood for them with those plastic bucket things) Any more input? Thanks!

I have mine in the kick panels and they really get in the way of the dimmer. Of course, I wear steel toed Doc's so that could be the problem.

My new kick panels, c/w speakers where delivered yesterday. I am hoping to install them tonight. My e-brake will be ok as mine is under the dash. The only interference I will have is the dimmer switch I guess. I am hoping that they work out.

I have mine in the kick panels and have no problem with my floor dimmer. I believe you have more problems in the doors with rain water, slamming the door ect. MO

If you want BIG speakers-put some behind the seat. I believe there are some post on building speaker boxes for this.

I put 'em in both. E-brake was cut and welded to the side of the arm for clearance.

The major difference is you can get a bigger speaker in the door and there is more air which will allow for more low-end or base. They do make rain guards for door speakers that covers the top of the to keep the water off of them but I have not seen them for 6X9 in a long time. The best way to do it would be if don’t have a tank behind the seat put some kind of box with a woofer behind the seat with the kick panel speakers for the best imaging. I use to put 6 inch woofers in the doors with a tweeter up high allot that way you had the low-end and could still have the imaging.
