When driving with my window down I have a ticking sound gets faster and slower with wheel rotation. So I think it is for sure the wheel area. When I lighly apply the brakes it stops? Anyone have any idea?

U-joint or cv joint(front wheel drive...yeah yeah, I know I shouldn't mention FWD stuff but you didn't specify, so no verbal abuse please......LOL).

First thing i would do is jack up the front end and tighten both wheel's and then do the same for the rear especially if you have any kind of aluminum rim's.

Then drive the truck and see if the sound is gone.

If not then look at your front brake's.

I know absolutely nothing about 4x4's. If your truck has cv joints then it is possible. The same sound came from my camry when the cv joints went bad, and the bad sound came from my truck when the u-joint went bad.

How can you tell if the ujoints are shot? And also if I pull the speedo gear out of the transfer case to check it will fuild leak out?

My first vehicle was a 76 Chevy 2wd(tan and white two-tone). I had the u-joints replaced in it,till then everytime i put it into drive,there was a big clunk noise. After replaceing the u-joints,the noise disappeared.

Hop under your truck and wiggle the driveshaft. If you see, feel or hear any slop, your u-joints might be going out.

Wiggling the driveshaft alone won't tell you. You should grab each joint and look for play at the source. My driveshaft is 100% tight. No gear play or anything, but I'm pretty sure my joints are going bad, cause I'm getting the clunk and the squeaky squeal too. Mine is bad enough that it does it under load, and now when I'm coasting too.

ah this did this to the x's car, drove me nuts.
ended up jacking up the one side tire and spinning it without tire.ended up being the brake pad riding the high spots on rotor, each time it hit low spot it would fall and click, took a screw driver and hammer and tapped the little ear on pad to tighten it up a liitle to caliper. fixed it

I had this same problem w/my 74 & thought it might be the front wheel bearings since the noise is continous. I replaced the bearings when rebuilding the front end & greased them properly, but I noticed the noise again last night when driving so I'm still trying to figure it out.

The brake pads on the caliper is worth checking. My 68 would make a loud clicking noise, but only when leaving from a stop. When I investigated the noise, I noticed a gap on the 'fingers' that hold the pads securely in place. A couple of quick taps w/the hammer to limit pad movement & that fixed the prob.

My friends F*** Ran*** was making a ticking sound the other day when it was in forward or reverse. We were going down the road at about 65 and there was a guy behind us that was waving and making a comotion. (The 33in tires on this truck are shot and vibrate the truck so bad and make so much noise you cant think!!) Any way, when we turned of the main road onto a county road we stoped to take a look, what we found was the rear left wheel was about to fall off!! All the lugs were just held on by a few threds!! My idiot friend let his little cousin tighten it!! The rim is shoot!! So like 87 STEPPER said, CHECK YOUR LUGS!!

This is a little off topic, but every time I let off the brake pedal, one of the calipers squeak. It has been doing this since I got it. Doesn't mean something is going bad does it?
