flipping springs?

I was on the Dodge forum asking about how to lower my straight axel 3/4 ton. A guy came up with the idea of flipping the leafs up front. here is what he typed:

FLIP THE SPRING PACK UPSIDE DOWN, THIS IS NOT PUTTING THE AXLE ON TOP OF THE SPRINGS, BUT INSTEAD FLIPPING THE SPRING PACK AND KEEPING THE AXLE ON THE BOTTOM

What do you guys think of that idea? Think it would work? what about ride quality.

Re: flipping springs?

There are guys that reverse the spring eyes, but that is done with a rig and a jack (simplest way) and it retailns the same spring rates, just the eye is below the spring and not above.

Here's a link:Linky

Re: flipping springs?

Flipping the axle to above the springs would involve cutting of and rewelding the mounting pads on to the bottom of the axle. I am assuming here that the front axles are similar to the units installed on Dodge trucks over here being made from cast iron. The issue is welding to this. If it was my project and want it low, swap out the front end for an independant unit or do a frame swap. I have a 1958-64 chev passenger car chassis which I am going to mod and drop on a square body at some later date after my 3/4 is done

Re: flipping springs?

no offense, but you would probably receive the appropriate answers on a Dodge forum as opposed to one aimed towards Chevy and GMC's.

Re: flipping springs?

Shane, as much that makes sence the guys on the dodge forum are very old skool and believe in the stock appearence. I notice you chevy guys have been dropping & bagging for a while. I like to ask you guys to get your input on it.

One Dodge guy did say he just used drop axels. It didn't put the truck on the ground but it sits pretty low.

I would love to do an IFS but i don't have the skills to pull that off.

There are plenty of those around here, too. But to each his/her own. My wife hated my truck bagged, but I am bagging my new one, too.
