6 broken wheel studs on the same wheel??? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I have been letting my sister use my truck for the last 4 months or so & the other night she calls me and tells me that she is stuck on the side of the road and the truck will not move. she tells me that when she puts it in gear she hears a clunking sound like the transmission is broken. So I think oh s!!T because I know that the tranny is old and ready for a rebuild. When I get there it is exactly as she said so I have her put it in gear and I look under the truck and the rear driveline is moving so I think rear end or axel busted. I leave her ther to go to Home Depot to pick up a socket set to take the rear drive line out and limp it home in 4WD. As soon as I get to home Depot She Calls me and says that the whell fell off. I get back and sure enough the right rear came off and is now wedged between the ground and the fender. I feel around where the wheel studs should be and nothing ?????
How can this happen? My sister has a new baby so i don't think she was doing anything crazy, Plus I live in the city so it has only seen street driving as far as I know.

BTW 84' silverado 4" lift 35's 12 bolt rear axel

I've seen that happen several times because of loose lug nuts, especially with big tires. The last time I saw it happen was to a freind/co-worker of mine. He bought a truck body from me and installed his motor/trans from another truck. Then he put three custom wheels from the donor truck with one new wheel, and he didn't know he was supposed to re-torque the new wheel after the first few miles. He set out towing the truck to Missouri for his son, but he lost the left front(new) wheel and tire in Mississippi, which rolled under an 18-wheeler causing considerable damage. Big mess, to say the least. Don't know if that was your problem or not, but it does happen.

i agree, i've seen this several times where i work and its usually caused by lug nuts being loose

same thing happened to me with a 1970 el camino i had.. the left rear (5 lug) tire "broke" off :/ ... but I was already missing one lugnut at the time, I think that had something to do with it.... What year is the truck? I remember the K10 lugnut studs to be very small and it wouldnt take much to bust em off.. K20 on the other hand :-)

I have heard of that thing happening too. But all six???? If it were all six that broke I would be leaning towards the idea of someone screwing around and trying to get revenge.

usually when the wheel is loose it will grind down the lug studs so that they are coned and eventually snapped and the wheel dont have to be that loose for that to happen. trust me ive been there myself

87 blazer- I agree completely. I also love your avatar. R.I.P. Dime. I have a goatee just about identical to dimes and Im getting ready to shave it clean (too many years and its just annoying now) but I think im gonna color it red as a tribute before I shave it.. If I do, Ill post pics
