Not mine and just too far away but here is one sweet survivor 72 GMC K2500 stepside from a Fire Department back east. Only 8400 miles and an untouched original red survivor.

In other words, they are saying: to get our money, we have to get rid of it, and get a new one even though we don't need it, as this one is rarely used & still like new.

What a sweet survivor!!When I first saw the title I started wondering how anyone could keep such low miles.Mine has 10x that and that`s low.Another good ole brush truck.I bet those boys love that truck to death.Prolly not allowed to make an inside deal or we`d never know about this beauty.

Can`t get over that FEMA statement,either.The general public is going through dire straights and the government that`s in debt over thier ears to China and Japan (among others) is spending money like it`s going out of style.Was there some natural disaster in NY state that I`m not aware of?This is only one FD.How many more got these grants?Will there be money when there is a disaster?

BTW I'll just about bet it could win the award for the "Most unweildy step bumper ever."
Some of the members who have removed step bumpers because they are too big and heavy will appreciate this.

Probably not, but I bet you that the reserve is way higher than anything we'd be able to spend for it, just so that when the reserve isn't met, they could say, "well, we weren't able to sell it to the public." Probably so that one of the guys could buy it. I know deals like that happen all the time.

As a mechanic who gets to work on a handfull ov pretty dang old fire truck equipment, let me say this;
That thing probably doesn't run nearly as good as everyone thinks. I will bet a punch in the gut it had a junk carb, abd an inch of sediment in the tank.

One of the fire departments locally has a 1980 F-150 4X4 with 25,xxx miles.
Same place has a 1976 Chevy C/60 (I think it's a 60) gasser 427 with 50xxx-ish miles.
Neither one of thoe trucks have the right to be in service, and the township that govorns the fire department refuses to spend the money to make them worthy.
So now, they just sit, and the fire department is worse off, becouse they can't get new equipment... they have "perfectly good stuff", yet it isn't good enough to fire up and haul ass outta the garage, have to warm them up (the chevy for almost 15 min on a cold morning) and even then, they still aren't running right.
FEMA is trying to equip this department with a replacement truck that is far more capable of doing the job.

We have fire fighters on here, and I'll bet a kick in the balls, they would HATE to have to drive something that old in a hurry to go and try to save someone's life.

As far as selling them and the way they are doing it, usually they are no able to just slap a for sale sign, they have to go to auction. And at your typical auction, there is a starting bid. (reserve) If it doesn't sell, they will try again or take it to a private auction with sealed bids.

I love me some fire apparatus. All I have in my "collection" is an Elkhart nozzle and a Phister carbon tetrachloride fire extinguisher. It still had the carbon tet in it when I got it over 30 years ago. Good cleaning fluid, but carcinogenic, I believe.

My comments are based more on emphasizing the fact that FEMA has done a very poor job of managing emergency aid. FEMA should be for crisis relief. A possible bad carb or lack of maintence on a fire truck shouldn't be their concern. But now things are getting political, so I'll drop it now

I agree though it's really old to have in an emergency fleet, regardless of condition. My '72 was a brush truck. My X father- in- law was a VRF, and bought it in '76 with 6,xxx miles on the clock.

On 911 when the Pentagon was hit a local VFD was called upon to bring it`s`57 Chevy firetruck down because it was small enough to drive inside.It musta run pretty good to make the 50mile drive down.I know of several old firetrucks in my area that are still in service and kept in top mechanical order.I`ve seen modern firetrucks in Baltimore with rust holes and heard of brakes going out causing accidents.I guess it depends on the municipalities.

That is very common too. My cousin works for FD here, and every several years they do this. They have to sell trucks that are perfect to keep the grant money coming in. The oldest truck in their fleet is only 11 years old, and has less miles than that one. They bought a huge ladder truck last year, and there is not a building bigger than 4 storys in whole damn county! They claim they bought it to promote bigger hotels, etc coming to county. Kia is building a plant across the river in West Point, GA and everybody is spending money like its water with big hopes of this becoming a huge metropolis overnight. They seem to forget that GA has put a huge restriction on how many AL residents can even work there. Still, everybody has $$$ signs in their eyes!

The Fire Dept is not claiming this vehicle to be a low mileage original, they are just stating the mileage on the odometer. So we can't assume it is.I would not be suprised if it was 108K.

Anymore I'd rather have an old truck than a new one...........At our VFD the new trucks have been nothing but headaches. We got an old '70's 1-ton Jeep pickup as a brush truck. Years ago they dropped a 454 in it and it will run, anyhow, its being replaced by a '09 F450. Earlier in the year they had the Jeep out and coming home from a brush fire they hit a deer with it at 60 mph, obliterated the deer but the truck had no damage other than needing washed to get rid of the red..........I bet the Ford we're getting would have suffered severe damage in the same incident. And the old Jeep works darn good all things considered. They just got a new engine to replace an old La France that had a 6V-71 Detroit and a 15 spd, this new one(was bought used but doesn't have much mileage and isn't old) has a M11 Cummins and a Auto, and it seems like all we do is work on it. Just got a new KW tanker to replace an old Mack............Mainly because very few of the members were smart enough to run a straight 5 spd mack tranny, but I bet I could have pushed the new truck and its ISM cummins up our mountains with that old 300 Mack under the hood in the old truck. Most of the the equipment was replaced because of state grants which require the old trucks to be sold for use other than Fire Trucks. That does not imply the equipment was junk.
