Does your truck already have a four wire setup on it? if It does I can tell you where everything goes in the 7 way.

Re: HELP!!! Wiring for a trailer hitch on a burb...

P.O. did a whack job on the wires behind the tail lights, I have yet to dig into this area, all I have done so far is look behind the lights to see a bunch of duct tape and wound up wires... in fact to take this a step further, I have the right rear back up light working but the drivers side back up light refuses to light up, the bulbs continue to fill with smoke every time I put one in it???

anyway, I just would like to know which wire should be which before I tear into it...

THanks though....

Either way here is where the wires go so you can do it with a test light if you want to. On the back of the 7 way there are colors by the pins and it goes like this. Red is left turn and stop, brown is right turn and stop, green is tail lights, black is the charge wire 12v hot, blue is the trailer brake wire, and white is the ground. If you have a reverse light wire it goes in the middle. Depending on the part of the country the trailer came from either the brake wire or charge wire might be in the center of the trailer plug so you might have to switch them depending on how the trailer is wired but 99% of them are the setup I just told you. Do you already have a brake control? or are you putting one in?

Re: HELP!!! Wiring for a trailer hitch on a burb...

Ok here is something to look for...your truck should have a blue wire and orange wire both of them are 12 gage already run from the front to the rear of the truck. Some don't but many do. they are there for a brake control and charge wire. Under the hood they are taped into a loop thats usually stuffed way down under the brake booster on the left as you look at the engine (they are a pain because they are taped up so all you can see is the loop so you have to use a razor blade to slice the electrical tape to pull the ends out) and another loop in the drivers side framerail at the back of the truck usually a pain because they are taped into the loom right where the gas tank keeps you from reaching them. There is a fuse block on the drivers side of the truck on the fender well and on the firewall side there is a cap with a battery wire going into it.If you pop the cap off there are two studs there. The orange wire will already have a ring on it so just put it on one of the studs and the battery wire for the brake control will come through the firewall and hook to the other. Don't hook em up until the plug at the back of the truck is done. Hope this helps you out.

Re: HELP!!! Wiring for a trailer hitch on a burb...

I just put a 7 wire connector on my truck. The wires on the 7 way are like this: white is the ground, green is left turn, yellow is right turn, and brown is for the brake lights. The wires for the trailer brake controller on mine are yellow and dark brown and are probably 10 or 8 gauge wire. The colors for the brakes depend on the ones in your brake controller kit or what ever wires were used by the installer. That only makes 6 live wires, the extra connection is for reverse or work lights on the trailer.
