Column shifter question (boot installation - and - Tow/Haul switch question)

Thanks to folks' help on here, I was able to find a shifter boot for my tilt column in my 2001 Z71. So, DUMB question, but does the tip of the shifter come off somehow(?) Don't think I can get that tight rubber thing over the end of the shifter... Just curious - don't necessarily want to remove the whole shifter from the column.

While I'm on the subj - how can the tow/haul switch be troubleshot? Mine no longer activates the tow/haul indicator on the dash, so don't know if it's the switch or my dash. How to check/replace?

Thanks gents. Boy, my 72 is much easier to work on... Ha.

The tow haul switch is a common problem. That orange wire coming out of the shifter is broken somewhere.
