Does a cowl hood provide anything other than clearance and a different look?

Maybe vents a little hot air out, and then I'd can't prove that point either. They look good.

Actually, it more likely lets cool air into the engine compartment. The original cowel induction hoods were designed to take advantage of the aerodynamic high presure area where the plane of the hood intersects the plane of the windsheild. There is a turbuulance at this intersection and wind is forced into the scoop portion. That, and they look really cool. They're also a lot more rigid than stock hoods becasue of the bends.

So the consensus is that the overall effect other than "looking cool" is that they actually have a positive cooling effect on the engine compartment?

the air at the bottom of the windshield is very turbulent and under pressure so with a cowl hood u get air forced into the engine compartment resulting in a cooler denser air charge which helps a little bit

A true cowl induction system has a rubber seal around the top of the breather that seals it to the hood. Inside the seal there is a hole in the hood under the top of the cowl scoop so that the air coming in through the cowl induction scoop is being forced into the engine's intake. 70 Chevelle SS had this. The truck cowl induction hoods are more for looks than anything.

Here ya go, here's the parts that are required for a true cowl induction system. The little Solenoid in the middle of the pic is vacuum operated and opens the cowl induction plate at the top of the cowl hood at high speed.

Well I'd love yours even more if it was on my truck. The coolness points are way up there on these, I just wanted to make sure that there's no mis-conceptions. As soon as I can afford one I'll have one too.

Randy is 100% right. Also the factory cowl induction are longer on the top and reach over the cowl a bit. The aftermarket hood you buy dont reach back far enough to take advantage of the pressure at the windshield. If you want it to really work you have to install the kit Randy showed us and buy a bolt on cowl hood that reaches closer to the windsheild. The non-functional ones still look great and I may be getting one myself
