factory soft top blazer

According to my build sticker my 72 blazer is a factory soft top blazer. How rare are these? I don't see much talk about the factory soft tops.

Re: factory soft top blazer

My 71 dealer brochure lists the soft top as a dealer installed option, not a factory option. Is it listed on your SPID? Pics of the SPID? The hard top on my SPID is listed as Auxiliary Top White 1Z5RAA.

Never seen one before. If it is real and you have the original soft top, it would be unique.

Re: factory soft top blazer

I will get a pic up of the SPID when it gets out of the body shop. From what I understand is in 72 there was a option to delete the hardtop and get a factory soft top. I have some of the hardware from the original soft top.

If you still have the original vinyl top it has probably shrunk down to the size of your wallet! Cool conversation piece though.

you're close.. All tops were an option in 72.. they didn't come with one. If you wanted a top, you had 3 to choose from. White or black hard tops, or a soft top, if i remember right, the soft top only came in black. What would really be rare, and i've never seen. would be a blazer with no options. No top, no windows, and only a drivers seat.

Re: factory soft top blazer

The sales brochure for 71 that I have indicates it was available in black or white. The picture in the link I posted is of a white top. Don't know if 72 was different.

Z58 is the white, hardtop option code. Black is Z59

Re: factory soft top blazer

The soft top was a dealer installed option sanctioned/advertised by GM.

Re: factory soft top blazer

As mentioned above that SPID specifies the hardtop, which of course is removable hence the wording.

I bought the truck from the original owner. He told me that it never had a hard top only a soft. He said he bought it new that way.

Re: factory soft top blazer

not much help on this one.. was at Jimmy GMC in Tucson in those days. Do know we never had one come in without a top or a soft top. Matter of fact, i don't even remember a black hard top comming in. But of course we only had Jimmy's not Blazers.

Re: factory soft top blazer

Blazers could be bought without a hard top. Hard tops were an option you could upgrade too. The hard tops were a gm option. If it was bought new with a soft top it was a dealer option not a gm option. This is the way I understand it to be........much like the roll bars. Gm never had roll bars put in them they were a dealer option only. That's why there's no code number for soft tops or roll bars. Wich I've also understood it to be, based on the brochures, pictures, and other info I've found. I could be wrong. Either way dealer or factory original is still cool

Re: factory soft top blazer

I guess it will remain a mystery. I don't have a top for it and I can't make up my mind on which one to get. If I decide on a hard top then I need to find a single wall because thats what it's set up for but they are dang hard to find in decent shape. Even if I had a top it would never be on the thing anyway.

Re: factory soft top blazer

There is a difference between the soft top and a roll bar. Although dealers I am sure would have installed an aftermarket bar if a customer wanted one, they were not, to my knowledge, a GM advertised accessory as was the soft top.

A soft top is a great option for a Blazer but the only one available does have a draw back as far as securing the vehicle somewhat if you are going to park it - the windows can't be rolled up all the way because the glass will interfere with the top therefore preventing the door's opening and closing. So if you were going to get in or out of either door, the window has to be down about 3 inches or so so the rear portion of the glass misses a hard mount for the top. You can roll them up all the way obviously when you are inside, but if the door is going to open, the window will have to be rolled down some.

Re: factory soft top blazer

My first Blazer came with a dealer installed soft top when I bought it from the second owner in 1984. I still have the top, but it needs some new zippers, a few snaps, and a good cleaning. The door windows could be rolled up all the way, as seen here, but obviously water leaking in could be an issue. It came with a set of rigid stiffeners for around the door windows that slid into
pockets in the soft top, but I never used them. Sniff, I miss my old dog.

Nice ole Whitco soft top, just like the dealers used to slap on them.
