Antenna

Has anyone successfully managed to take an antenna cable apart. Been looking at it for a couple days and can’t find a way to replace cable

You need to find a local Ham shop. CB would have done, but that's archaic now. Get some fresh coax, and have them put a fresh plug on the end.

If repairing the original doesn't pan out, this is all available new for around $60.

Re: Antenna

I took mine apart and replaced the cable. You need to pull that strap clamp off and the rubber piece will come off. Then you can see what you need to solder.

Re: Antenna

The thing with all coaxial cable [COAX] is that center wire is the HOT lead, that receives or tramsmits signal. The braided sheath of the outboard cable is the Ground. It should be grounded to the chassis on one end and soldered to the outside metal of the plug.

Re: Antenna

You should be able to get a fresh male Antenna Plug like that.*
Strip the Coax back. The center wire is the lead or Hot side. Often made of copper. Solder that inside the thin probe. After peeling back the outer insulation, there's a braided core. That's the Ground side. That should be soldered [or crimped] to the outboard of the plug. [Solder's better]
That type plug relies on friction to stay in the radio socket, so bend back the wings on the outside of the plugs for a tighter fit if needed.
*Radio Shack might carry it in their online store. Or Francis Wire Works.
That type isn't really reusable.

Thanks for the reply and information, right now having trouble sourcing parts. Will try Ron Francis when he opens up. Maybe radio shack

Looks like there's a lot more to the stock antenna base than aftermarket. The inside part of the non-stock antennas just has a metal ''cage'' to brace against the upper mast. There must be some electronic ''guts'' in the one in the pic.

Jim -- Did you get a male radio plug or brand new radio coax lead yet?

Re: Antenna

After talking with Wayne at Ron Francis, he mentioned Cruthfield, so on Monday I’ll give them a call

No luck so far in finding cable ends, still sourcing parts

There is a plastic piece inside that I would like to clean up, looks kinda tatty, maybe cut half off and slide a sleeve on

It looks like it may be swagged on there, I don’t know
