anyone relocated gas tank under cab ?

Hello all, I was wondering if anyone has relocated their fuel tank under the side of the truck between the frame and body ? I would like to mount one there as I want to keep my spare tire under my truck in the rear. Just wondering if anyone has done this and what kind of tank they used ? Thanks

Not sure, but I don't think there's enough room in there to pop in a 20 gallon tank???

Any reason you can't have it behind the seat? I've had mine in the stock location in my 68 GMC for 15 years and 20 in my 69 Chevy with no problems.

There`s not enough room for a tank and I`m not sure why you want to move it.Surely not safety.

I would say anything is possible. There are hundreds of different tanks out there in different sizes and shapes. Just do some investigating on the size, sending unit signal and supply line size and you just may find what you want. Other than the exhaust having to be run on one side and you may have to give up having a large capacity tank. I say try it. Just do a bunch of measuring and research first. I moved my tank under the bed by using a Jeep tank that is 15 gallons. I didn't like the Blazer tank hangin so low so I found a smaller one. Jeeps were offered with a V8 so supply line size was big enough. Also Jeep uses the same sender signal as GM.

Also you may try an aluminum fuel cell. They make 10" tubular shaped ones that are real long. They also have sending units with them. They are pricey though.

I am doing a frame up show truck and want the space behind the seat for speakers, and storage space. I was just wondering if anyone has put a tank on the side out of another truck and was wondering what they had used.

I have thought about a jeep tank. I have one out of a blazer as well but I don't like the way it hangs, and I really want a side take to have room for my spare tire in the back if I can.

You really don't gain much room by moving the tank if you keep the stock nonfolding seat. Although there would be enough room for speakers.

Honestly, I don't know how anyone could drive these trucks with the tank in the cab. I realize it's a long shot getting T Boned, but the thought of it just doesn't sit well with me.

Ya, I don't want to listen to the gas sloshing around on top of the fact that I am going to want to put some subs and an amp back there !!

Well if you get a fuel cell made for it, then no problem, since they have foam(?) inside to keep the gas in the tank , in case of a t bone wreck. Or a crash in general.

I know studebaker trucks had under cab tanks but the cab was cut out and shaped for it to fit. so im pretty sure without cab mods a under cab tank would not work out to well

Some people have put extra saddle tanks in that location that run in conjunction with the stock behind the seat tank. However, because of the small space available you can only get about 10 to 12 gallon capacity on each side.

Don't you just turn the stereo up to remove the sloshing noise?
If you can't hear it sloshing you know it is time to fuel up.

I`m not saying don`t do it or wanting to argue the age-old "the tanks are perfectly safe where GM put them,millions have done it with no problems" thing.All I`m saying is going under the cab you`ll get about a 5 gallon tank and it`s not a very safe place.The`73-ups that had 18/20 gallon tanks had raised floors to accomodate the tanks and they were mostly under the bed.I have Kicker boxes that I want behind my seat in one of these trucks and that`s the only reason I want to move my tank to the spare tire position.They sounded great back there in my old`84.The bass kinda was like a back massage.If yours is a show truck you really don`t need a spare,do ya?
As far as gas sloshing around.In 35 years I`ve never taken notice.I never hear it sloshing,just once in a blue moon it will do that thump noise I guess when it expands.But,believe me,they are safe.Not saying a t-bone couldn`t rupture a tank.But,I was t-boned at 60 mph in the very first one of these trucks I bought and it was totalled,in`74.I say the year because it was obviously about a new truck being a`72 with less than 20,000 miles on it.It was a very hard hit,bowed the frame.I wouldn`t have wanted a tank between the body and frame under the cab,either.

You may be able to have a custom tank made to suit your need, although It probably won't me more than 14 gallons or so.
