Last night, my "new" 85 C10 long bed 305 ci, 350 tranny lost it. With no warning (to me at least) the transmission went. To get it to move, you can rev up the engine and get maybe 5 mph out of it on flat ground. When it went to shift last night, I heard and felt it slip, and then nothing. Checked the tranny fluid this morn and it's like gray soup. Anything I can do to isolate a problem or does it sound like tran failure? Keep in mind, there has been so prior slipping in the tranny. Could new tran fluid and filter bring her back? thanks for any help.

eta. removed the tranny pan. Fluid is more solid black than grey. Seems pretty gummy.

in all honesty if the fluid is that bad just change the whole thing i paid $525 installed for a rebuilt on mine last year they wont be more than that in any place that is reputable

There is a TH350 for sale about 20 miles from here for $50, says it worked when pulled.

When you change out a transmission(which it sounds like you will be doing) make sure you clean out the lines going to the cooler and do not reuse the same torque converter as all these parts have debris in them,

mrh33916 Clean out with what? Got a hold of the guy with the tran. Tomorrow probably go get it. I can spend $50 for another transmission not almost $600. I only gave about $400 for the whole truck, so it wouldn't make sense.

When I do them I blow it out with compressed air, shoot a can of brake cleaner in one line and let it run out of the other into a catch can. Then blow it out again.

Got ya, thanks. How bad would it be to use the old converter? I like the sound of $50 and a day under the truck. I could handle that. Can't find a converter for less than $170.

If it has debri in it it will severly shorten the life of your new/used transmission.

Is your tranny a TH350 or a TH350C?

The TH350C has an electrical plug on the driver's side of the case (just above the oil pan) that is for the lockup convertor.

The trash in your tranny is ALSO in your tranny cooler, so IT needs to be flushed.

So then why would I lose forward and reverse all at once?

You lost forward and reverse because the pump can't pick up the gunk fluid in the pan and build pressure enough to apply the clutches in any gear. No matter what, replace the converter. You'll never get it clean enough to use. New trans don't come with one? jim

It is a th350c. I want to swap with a th350. I suppose I need to address the wiring, and will definitely have to get a different tc. Anyone know anymore about this?

Pull the plug and tape it up away from the tranny. Hang a TH350 in it's place (with a new Torque Converter) and drive the truck. You will see some differences in RPMs on the road from the TH350C---Not much though.

Almost 2 years of work, but it was really worth the effort. Little stuff left to do is mount winch, wet sand & buff out and build belly pan\running boards. Body work takes lots and LOTS of beer!!!! God, Guts and Guns made America and God, Guts and Guns will preserve it! The worst thing you could do is get into my sights, but that don't matter, you'll never know it, cause you'll never hear the shotJim or Paladin whichever you choose.
