Rear portion of hood not closing?
Hello everyone been working on my new to me 78 c20
The truck was my uncles up until his passing. I've mainly been working some of the bugs out but one thing that's really bothering me that I need to get fixed is the hood. The rear portion doesn't want to close all the way. And if you try to push it down it just pops back up. Not sure if this is a common problem or not or if my hinges are bad or what they don't seem to be bent or anything. Curious what you guys think. I should add that it wouldn't be too surprising if my uncle put different hinges on from another truck that may not even be correct. They look correct though.

Re: Rear portion of hood not closing?
Hinge is attached too high at the fender.. Loosen the lower bolt and lower the hinge.

Re: Rear portion of hood not closing?
Ok thanks I'll give it a shot, that actually did cross my mind.
Gonna post a couple pics of the hinges just because but I'm pretty sure there the correct ones. The funny thing is that both sides of the hood are the same way not sure why my uncle would have left it like this but he had a way not fixing little things like this until he really felt like it. I'll try to readjust them this afternoon

Re: Rear portion of hood not closing?
Well yesterday I tried to readjust the hinges but was not able to make any improvements I'm thinking they were already set all the way back.
Not sure what's going on. Gonna take the hood off and try and see if there's anything obvious going on that I can't see with the hood on.

Re: Rear portion of hood not closing?
I haven't done much work of this type on the square body trucks, so I may be "off base" here. There are two hood styles for these trucks.. The early ones ,'73 - 75 had exposed wipers and a cowl of sorts.. '76 had hidden wipers and a different hood.. Is it possible your
uncle installed the early hinges?? |

Re: Rear portion of hood not closing?
Straight6 thanks for starting this thread it made me go out and spray oil all over my hinges and springs. Just a little oil really makes a difference.

If you are doing this alone, you may be better off oiling the hinges, removing the inner fenders, loosening all the bolts on the hood and hinges then close the hood to get it where it fits the best, then tighten it up as much as you can from underneath.

Re: Rear portion of hood not closing?
Use rust buster lube first work it in. Then oil the hinges well on all the rivets both side of the rivets open close the hood about 1/2 way up and down. Once it starts to loosen up go little bit higher till it smooth.

Re: Rear portion of hood not closing?
Easier with a helper for this, a prop rod may be used as well. An adjustable prop rod would make it easier by yourself. Loosen the hinges from fenders. One person push all the way up on hood at latch point. Other person tightens hinges while hood is being pushed up. If this does not fix the problem, hinges most likely need to be replaced.

Adjust the front hinge fender side down.
