All that glitters isn't gold

Oil pressure has been acting goofy.
Been a good run with this one.
100+ passes and 5k+ on the street, will look deeper tomorrow

Re: All that glitters isn't gold

Trying to figure out what I'm looking at here. Is that the engine oil pan, or the Trans pan???

If thats the trans,,,, dude thats not bad at all for 5000 miles and 100 passes

but.... Mentioning oil pressure it is engine right???,,, I think I'd pull the distributor first thing and inspect the bronze distributor gear. Just doesn't look like bearings to me! Gotta be a thrust washer, spring shim, distributor gear,, If you've been using a good filter (hopefully) might just be a cleanup and some soft part and back for another 5000 / 100

That's in th drain pain for the engine oil.
No brass gear for the distributor.
Going to pull more apart today.

X2 on the distributor gear. If that was bearing you would be hearing it .

Re: All that glitters isn't gold

The usually 80 psi has been fading to 50+/- and 10 psi at idle then comes back up to 30psi. Something is self clearancing.

Ouch,, yup not sounding good. Cam bearings would be my first suspect if she's not knocking.

I would pull the cam first. I have seen a rear cam bearing separate and allow the oil to dump. The bottom end will get pressure but hardly anything up top. Obviously everything needs checked but I would work from the top down.

Re: All that glitters isn't gold

Fwiw the pickup tube broke 5 years ago. Had oil pressure dropped the pan swapped pump pickup and pan. And been beating it ever since.
So maybe that failure is showing it's face

Re: All that glitters isn't gold

And..... I was just looking at the wear pattern on that distributor gear. Not being able too see what the other face of the gear looks like... but kinda appears to be riding pretty high. When it goes back together might want to revisit distributor depth especially if this is a slip-collar

Re: All that glitters isn't gold

Dropped the pan. Looked good no obvious grenades. Said F it. I'll pull the trans at the same time and freshen up both.

I thought the pattern was awfully high. Its a fixed distributors

Re: All that glitters isn't gold

You don't see any 'BIG END' of rods that are as discolored as the pin end of the one in the pic? Man someone got that one pretty hot to slip the pin through? Or just cooked oil?

Hopefully all looks as good as that bore!!! Being diligent and watching our for teh motor may have paid off big time. Hope you continue to find good things.

Re: All that glitters isn't gold

The heat marking on the pin end is from the hot box used for pin installation if all of them show the signs . Not likely to have 8 burnt up pins . I don't run press fit because of this . I don't like taking a new treated rod and cooking it to expand it . Just doesn't seem correct . Been done a million times though .

Very interested in the outcome also . A lot of metal in the oil . Something is wearing . Hope its an easy fix .

Re: All that glitters isn't gold

It's coming out this weekend. I'm very curios too.
If the block isn't hurt, going to bump the compression a better rod and port the heads.

Hmmm who's lifters?

Hopefully that's all there is to it. seems like a lot of debris for just one lifter / pushrod.

Re: All that glitters isn't gold

I know. But the material seems to be consistent with the retainer.
Its happened before too.
I have the old set somewhere.
Do you believe that could be the oil pressure issue though

Re: All that glitters isn't gold

Found the old lifterm in my junk drawer.

This one made noise but no oil pressure fluctuations, but was a different gauge.
