Fix this? Junk it? New cab?

Hi..finally playing with my rustbucket 71, and the more i dig the worse it gets. The roof is really rusting bad, seems to grow more each year, the radio holes are hacked, and the floor is totally shot, although the lower rust is expected. On a side note the main harness has been cut up a bit too..but that is a different topic.

Soooo, is this worth a roof swap and assorted other work? I can't do squat regarding bodywork, so I have to farm it all out. Most I have talked to say get another cab, but they are also kind of nervous about tackling the roof issues.

Thought i would see what you guys thought, fire away!

Not sure what else is available in your area, but where I live I wouldn’t even consider trying to fix it. Too many dry cabs available here to mess with that rust-mite infestation.
Good luck with whichever way you go!

Re: Fix this? Junk it? New cab?

Look at other parts trucks around you
Saskatchewan has to have more then a few of these trucks in farmland seen at least 1 71 chevy on kijii classic auto

Also get quotes from shops that do auto restoration for the roof work
A paint and collision repair shop may push use a different cab

Re: Fix this? Junk it? New cab?

I found a really good 67 cab last year just south of assinaboia so they are still out there. I did look for a bit but was worth it.

Is that the lime green truck I sold to you back in the day? Time flies, that seems like it was forever ago. Me and body work don't go together either, so if you need to farm it out I would be on the hunt for a new cab.

Good metal is getting much tougher to find, but still a few out there yet. I scored these two clean ones this past weekend.....they were two weeks away from getting crushed which would have been an absolute shame. The green one may potentially be for sale, not sure yet though.

Hah yeah its the same truck, just rustier. There is NO excuse for having left it this long, and now it is really eaten up. Fifteen years ago! Embarrassing.

Haha, don't worry I'm bad at leaving stuff too. I don't know if you had seen my 4x4, but I blew it apart and it's not back together....so yeah lol.

Re: Fix this? Junk it? New cab?

You could buy a pretty nice rust free cab and pay for a road trip to go get it for what a lot of shops would charge to repair that roof and maybe quite a bit less.

4speedwagon and I live about ten miles apart and I see the same thing fairly often. If I don't get my butt in gear on my 71 I'll be in the same boat.

This is on the Spokane Craigslist. https://spokane.craigslist.org/pts/d...188542291.html They don't list the cab but if it is good it is probably for sale.

Cab that appears to be nice from a couple inches off the floor but the floor is gone. Roof looks real nice though. Thompson Falls Mt.
