underhood noise alt or power steering pump?

ok quick question once again
im trying to find a noise under my hood i have got it down to the either the alt, or power steering pump pully.

it is a constiant noise and that is what it sounds like (bad bearing- i think) when i rev the motor up i cant tell if it gets louder because of engine noise, but win at idle it is constaint.

it does not sound like a rattle but more of like a squeel (dont know really how to explain it)

i can hear it in side the cab at idle and parking lot driving.

as far as parts i bought the alt in 2005-06 its a powermater 140amp and the power streeing pump was on there when i bought the truck. i have always kept proper fuild level in it.

anyone else heard this noise before? or have any advise?

Re: underhood noise alt or power steering pump?

Stick a long screwdriver to your ear and then down to the ps pump or alt and should be able to tell which one it is. Hope this helps.

or loosen/remove a belt and fire it up. if the noise is gone, then the pully that is no longer spinning is the bad one.

Re: underhood noise alt or power steering pump?

I once had a similar noise that I couldn't find. An older mechanic told me that antifreeze on a belt can make a ticking sound. Sure enough, a new belt cleared up the problem.

Re: underhood noise alt or power steering pump?

I've got a pete jackson gear drive timming set (the noisy one) in my daily driver, & have had several complete strangers (always helpful & sincere) tell me at a light or in a parking lot........ Hey buddy.... Sounds like your p.s. Pump or alternator has a bearing going. I love that whine. I've had water pumps make noise too, but if you grab the fan & try to wiggle it, you can usually tell if theres any slop in the bearing. john

Maybe so, but if the noise comes back, try a new belt.
