How many use utility trailers with your truck?
I'm curious how many use the smaller utility trailers with their trucks? I'm wondering why the truck box doesn't suffice? I get it if you want to pull a smaller lawn mower/tractor. Not talking about the large haulers, something you can put a car or real tractor on. Those are a different animal.
Ive never used one, maybe I'm missing something?

Re: How many use utility trailers with your truck?
I use one, mostly for moving my lawn tractor. Best thing is the lower lift height when I cm carrying stuff other than the lawn mower.

Re: How many use utility trailers with your truck?
I have a Well-built (Homemade) Motorcycle trailer that my Daddy bought years ago at a moving sale.
I replaced the wood in between the channels for the c-channel with metal diamond tread. I also bought 10 Ply tires for it. I haul everything on it. It is low to the ground and makes things easy when loading and unloading. I added some d-rings to it also in the link below. I really like these d-rings. D-Ring Link: https://www.etrailer.com/Tie-Down-An...hy/RR6K-4.html I haul garden tractors, zero turn mowers and an 8N and a 9N Tractor if the rear tires are not filled with fluid.

Re: How many use utility trailers with your truck?
I have a utility trailer that was half a Longbed Fleetside once.
Bought the trailer for $200 in 2006, and AZ MVD charged me $198 to license it. [But it has ''Permanent'' tags.] I have a '68 C/10 Stepside shortbed, with a 24'' cross-sill tool chest, so a 6' bed is a 4' bed. And my other rig is a '71 GMC Jimmy, so no bed. The trailer is handy behind either.

Re: How many use utility trailers with your truck?
I’ve pulled my car trailer with my 72 and I’ve pulled the dump trailer loaded as my everyday truck was out of commission .

Re: How many use utility trailers with your truck?
I built a utility trailer back in 95. Made to haul three dirt bikes. Dirt bikes are gone but it hauls my zero turn and four wheeler quite nicely.
When I built it I used 3500 lb axles so I got the bigger wheel bearings. |

Re: How many use utility trailers with your truck?
I use trailers of all sizes a lot. Part of the reason is I don't have to clean my truck bed out to load it.

Re: How many use utility trailers with your truck?
I use my 5 x 10 for more things than you can imagine. What's not to get? For one, I can haul twice as much as with just the truck and the truck is very capable of such a load. Right now my trailer is sitting with gravel in it that I picked up when I had the time. It's there for when I'm ready to spread it in my basement. I work my truck but I have a trailer so I don't have to have a front end loader dumping gravel in the bed. There are a lot of other loads I use my trailer for that I'd rather not haul in a pickup, especially not a special 50 year old one I don't want to beat up. I really like the very low loading height of the trailer compared to the truck. Makes it possible to drag large heavy items on by myself. Things like axles, engines, cabs, beds, etc. Firewood is much easier to load and unload, plus the trailer hauls more than the truck. I can get home with it and unhook to be dealt with later. Another great thing is I can haul the trailer with any of my vehicles. I work out of a Suburban the same as I worked out of my last truck with tool cap over the bed. I hauled tools locked in the truck and hauled materials in the trailer. The trailer is very handy. It only has two tires to rot, no ethanol to go bad, no battery to go dead, and no insurance policy needed

Re: How many use utility trailers with your truck?
I used this 6x10 with 13" dual wheels to haul a lot of stuff too long for the truck and I don't have to lift as high to load it , The dual wheels make it easier to back up with and it's wide enough to haul a zero turn mower . Great little trailer .

Re: How many use utility trailers with your truck?
Lots of trailers are being used. I didn't realize that duals were easier to back up with. Ive never had a small trailer, Ive only used my old car hauler (long gone due to easily dragging too much stuff home), or a boat.

Re: How many use utility trailers with your truck?
Yeah... dual axles don't make backing easier. They may even make it slightly harder, because the tires will scrub on tight turns. Trailer length and axle placement will have more of an impact.

Re: How many use utility trailers with your truck?
Duels are mostly on larger trailers . If you took a 14 ft trailer with duels or single backing would be the same . Small trailers are the worst ever try to back up a log splitter ?

Re: How many use utility trailers with your truck?
I always laugh when I go to use my little trailer (5x8 I believe). After being a truck driver and doing farm trailers, you would think I could zap this little one anywhere. Nope, using a bumper hitch, plus being small makes me look like a goof-ball at times. Sure glad I don't need it much. MY ego would be VERY low.

But you are mostly correct - single or dual axles don't make a whole lot of difference in backing a trailer... in most cases. The tighter the turn is, and the heavier a trailer is, the more tire scrub comes into play.

Here's my 1978 with a 6x12. Use this thing as well as the bed.
Heavier items are easier to put in the trailer. |

Re: How many use utility trailers with your truck?
Wheels are single or 'dual' while axles are single or 'tandem'. The narrower and shorter the trailer the harder to back straight. They cut so fast you constantly have to correct. I went with 5' deck so the trailer went where the truck went. No wider than the truck makes for easier driving. BUT... it sucks for backing up. You don't see the fenders until it starts to turn and a short narrow trailer cuts quick. I rarely ever back mine right into my driveway in one shot. What makes it worse is my driveway is sloped. Geometry changes once the tires hit the slope and the effect is cut sharper. I try accommodating that but end up too wide. I can count on one hand the times I've been able to stick it the first shot.

Re: How many use utility trailers with your truck?
I have an unused boat trailer, nice EZ Loader, that has whats left of my old flat bottom v-drive boat just sitting there. Sounds like converting it to a utility trailer might be a good idea. Thanks for all the input.
