67 C20 LB Conversion to C10 SB Fleet.

I have a blog of this but thought i better do the same one here to make it easier for you all to read it, and comment. So here I go.

July 23 2010
The Beginning
So here is my truck about 6 or 8 months ago. Essentially unchanged from what it looked like when i bought it off a friend at work. I should add that before i bought this particular truck, i bought a 1967 Chevy C10. This truck was not in the most desirable condition, but at the time I thought that with some hard work it could be done. Since that time it became a parts truck which really all that is left of it is a frame. The one that i am going to cut down.

New Master Cylinder
So a while ago i stumbled on a 72 GMC 3/4 ton in a junk yard. It had a power master cylinder in it. I asked about the price for it and they let it go for 25 bucks if i remember correctly. I also stripped some more parts off of it but we will get to that later. So here are some pictures of the motor before and after master cylinder change out. The lines are now hooked up.
So here are the Pictures that show it. But it isn't going to work. Its shot.

The Frame
Well here is a picture of my other truck that I started with. It is the one that I have turned into a parts truck.

So here there it is when I got it trailered it to my house and I took the front clip off. Obviously I got a better truck to work on. This is a picture of it all stripped down into parts and after i sold the cab and then removed to motor and trans.

As you can see it is marked for being chopped. I have to get the truck out of the garage before I can get started on really any frame work. I am pretty close to being able to do that, just new ball joints and the new spindles and discs. It shouldn't take too much longer, although it may reduce my budget a lot.

So I guess I need to show the Truck as it sits right now. I do have a new tailgate that came out of a junk yard for 50 bucks. Its really straight. The front tires are off in preparation for tearing into the front end.

Bad News.

July 29 2010

So I don't have any pictures to update you with. Although I ran into a stumbling block, that happens to be with the new spindles I grabbed from the junk yard. This ended up being a waste of money but I didn't get into it to bad. The bad thing is that I drilled my axles and drums. Now I am going to have to buy a whole kit from CPP and call it good. I will have to replace the axles as well if i want them to match the new front that I am going to get. So yeah that sucks, although I am slowly getting the frame stripped down to nothing so that I can chop it down. Right no I am trying to just put the drum brakes on from my 1/2 ton front end. So anyway I thought you all would like this picture of a 54 Chevy that I took a picture of at the local car show.

1/2 Ton now.

Aug 1 2010
Well as you all know my good truck is a 3/4 ton or at this stage was a 3/4 ton. So my updates are that I converted the front end to a 1/2 ton 6 lug with drums, since my disc conversion didn't work out as well as I planned. So I am going to have to wait until I have more funds to be able to buy the kit from CPP. Anyway i still have to convert the steering linkage over so that is why its not all together in the picture.

Yes my shop is now pretty messy, with all the extra truck parts all over the place. Anyway to update you all on my frame here are some current pics. I don't think there is anything left on it that I still need to take off. I just need to cut the 12" sections in the middle and 8" in the back and then weld it all back together. I am moving the rear cab mounts back right now but I didn't have a big enough drill bit for it. I have drilled the pilot holes though and removed the cab mounts. Oh I also removed the the front end and that will be sand blasted at the same time as the frame.

Here it is with the wheels on.
So I thought I would snap a photo today of what the truck looks like. I put all of the steering linkage in today and finished up the front end. Man it sure looks like a 1/2 ton now. I like it. I will like it even better when I have it on the road. Next step is to hook up rear brake line then bleed all of the brakes and adjust e-brake. Then all I have to do is hook up the link bar in the rear and charge the battery then make her maiden voyage. Ha Ha.

So I have not done much lately
I have done all of the things that were needed to make it into a half ton. So I needed to bleed the brakes to get it ready for the road. I tried to rent the vacuum tool from Autozone but it did not have the reservoir. So I took it back and ordered one from Amazon but I am waiting for it. Although I did notice that my rear cylinder on my drums had the bleed valve broke off. So I decided just to replace the whole thing. In the process of taking it off I broke the brake line. I pretty much knew that this was going to happen. So I also had to replace that. So here are the pics.

Did Some things.
Well here is the truck now. Last night I put in a new back window with a little help from my wife. I am waiting on some weather stripping because the stuff that I ordered from Classic Parts pretty much sucked and broke while installing them. As soon as I get the new weather stripping the truck is going out of the shop for a while and the frame is going in to be modified. So here are some pics of what it looks like now. Oh I also bought new mirrors but I am waiting on the arms. They are on back order.

This morning i put on new plugs and wires. I am eventually going to do a conversion on the points and a new cap. It sounds a lot better than it did before. I think we may be running on all 8 cylinders now. You will also notice that the new master that I had in it is gone. It didn't work out, the booster is shot. I have a new one on the way.

Here is the new old back window. It came from the parts truck. The one in there was broken.

Got the weather stripping in so the trucks out of the garage.
To make room for the frame that I am going to shorten. You have already seen the frame that i am going to shorten. So here is the newest edition. Its a 66 short bed Chevy frame. I know its not going to fit my truck. The key is that it has CPP disc set up in the front and the rear end is going to take place of the one that I messed with and now it still works but i need new axles. what can I say i am a beginner. So now the frame is going to be shortened and then all the stuff from the 66 is going on the 67 frame. Any body want to buy a 66 short frame? Its gonna have to be the right price because I have always wanted that style truck, so I think I will save it for a future build.

Nothing to new going on.

So not much has happened since I moved the two frames into the garage. Until today, my brother in law came over and helped me strip most of the stuff off the 66 frame. So that helped. and the other day I wired up 220 volt for my welder and made a 25' extension cord for it. Now all I need is C02 and I will be welding. So you know That 67 frame will be short real soon. It feels good to have a welder again. Its like getting an arm back or something. Anyway that about it so I will throw some pics on of the frame when I get started.

In the welding business now!
Well I think I mentioned that I wired my welder up last Friday. So yesterday I got my CO2 tank filled and I ran some welds on some old scraps of frame. Felt so good to be welding again, I was giddy about it all night. So today I got some scrap steel and braced up the 67 frame in preparation to cut that sucker in half. So I was going to wait but I decided to go for it. I got some of it cut but I need some more cut off wheels. So here are some pics.

This is harder than it looks.
So now my frame is a short bed frame. The funny thing is that it is off square by 1/8". That is the best I could get it. anyway it took me a good 4 to 6 hours to do this. Was a pain to line it all up again. I had a box of c-clamps and a hand full of square tube steel to help line it all up. I think its coming along well. I also think that this part is going to be the easy part of the conversion. Here are some pics, enjoy.

Cutting the bed soon
So i haven't done much on my truck lately. I have however unbolted my bed and taken it off and got it in the shop for the winter. So my winter project is going to be shortening the bed and getting the frame back to rolling status. Here are some pics.

So I have some fenders that I kept from the inside of the bed of my other truck. They are going to serve as tubs. this is about as wide as they are going to be.

So i haven't done much lately, But I did get some 2" drop springs from CPP in the mail last week. So i will have a 4.5" drop in the front. I think i will do at least 6 in the rear but i will do whatever it takes to make it level.

I also go a new timing light for like 9 bucks from sears. It was a clearance deal. I thought it was good.

My next purchase will be 5" drop springs for the rear, an adjustable trac-bar, and ball joints. Then i will get things going back together.

I was just thinking i need to do a c-notch in the frame also.

well progress is progress it feels great to get your truck back on all four wheels mine sa with the front suspnsion off for ever unitil we got all the ball joints then i put her on four wheels it felt good
