Quieter Starter?

I remember a post awhile back where someone put a newer model starter on their truck and said it was WAY quieter than the original one.... Anyone remember that post? I can't seem to find it w/search. Just thinking of replacing mine while I can get to it, cuz mine wakes up the neighborhood when I crank it!

Re: Quieter Starter?

you probably need to shim it... or unshim it.
A starter should make very little noise.

So how do I find out which way I need to go? I wanna do it while I've got the headers off.

I like waking my neighbor up with my cars. I cant wait till I get the 454 in the fleet....I will wait till about 6 am and start it with no exhaust!

Re: Quieter Starter?

I'll be honest, I've never had to do it. However, I know in the box that my last new starter came in, there was a small rod, and a couple shims, and a paper that I'll assume had instructions on. (been at least 5 years)

Re: Quieter Starter?

Found this on a website:

1. If there is a starter noise when you crank the engine, remove one shim.

2.If there is a high-pitched whine after the engine starts, add a shim one at a time until the noise disappears. DO NOT use more than four shims. To add a shim, loosen the inside bolt, remove the outside bolt, add the shim and then retighten both bolts.

So my starter should be relatively quiet? Seems I remember every old truck I've had were pretty noisy when cranking. This one seems to be louder, but then again, I'm gettin older, and all noises seem louder and more annoying than they used to.... LOL Oh ya, it's not like a screech or clank or anything weird... it's just the typically starter noise, but really loud.

Re: Quieter Starter?

I remeber the post and it was a starter from a 1994-2000 chevy truck.

yup that was me using that starter, it still works great and very quiet compared to my old one. the only thing you will need if i remember correctly is longer starter bolts
