Picked up a new 1967 c10

Found this on Craigslist for a pretty good price. Had it shipped to my house in Tacoma, so that it will be waiting for me when I get back from deployment.


This will be my first attempt on a rusted-out truck, but the price was right, and mechanically, it doesn't look like bubba got his hands on it. It's supposed to be a good runner, so I may just drive it as is until I figure out what to do with it.

That's a cool truck. I'll be honest though. Seeing how somebody hacked it up to install a sun roof makes me kinda sick. That's probably what scared other people away and got you a good deal. I suppose you could cut the top off a truck at the junk yard, and weld it on. Not exactly easy, but doable. Another option is to install an interior roof liner so you at least don't have to see it while driving

I agree with you. I have no idea why someone would have cut the roof, but it seems like a decent enough truck otherwise. Not sure if I want to try to patch it, or replace the whole roof. Either way, it will be a new experience for me with the welding.

Depending how I feel once I see the truck, the roof may be way down on the list of priorities.

Just wanted to update what's going on. Ctener came through with a good roof, and my truck is currently getting the roof, rockers, and cab corners replaced by forum member Livrat.

Prior to dropping it off, my son and I cleaned it up a bit.

Aside from that, I replaced the alternator with an internally regulated one from a 1980s truck. I also picked up a MY6 transmission and a 400SB to replace the granny-geared 4 spd and tired 283.

Mr Chevrolet, yes, he's doing both sides. I asked around locally for references for someone to do the roof ( there's a lot of forum members in the Tacoma area), and everyone mentioned Livrat by name. I'm deferring to him on the metal work.

I picked-up a bedside and floor for the truck, too. I plan to get swap the bed parts out in the next couple of weeks. I'll be out of the army in December, and if all goes well, my son and I will be painting the truck next Spring.

I got the truck back from Livrat a couple weeks ago. The work he did was outstanding. I get out of the Army next week and will be returning to CA. I'm looking forward to the warmer, dryer weather.

The roof would have never happened if Ctener didn't step-up and offer me a roof, then take the time to cut it off. I'd never met him prior to him offering his roof to me.

When I asked around about a metal worker, each of the three forum members I spoke with told me about Livrat. I'm a pretty decent wrench spinner, but not a body man at all. Livrat explained what all he needed to do, how he was going to do it, and even finished ahead of schedule. I am glad to have met him. He's definitely everything that was said about him and more.

Thanks for all the support. I'm looking forward to be getting out of the Army, but know I will miss it. I found a slot in a Tank Squadron in the CA National Guard. So, I'll still get to play tanker one weekend a month once I leave active duty.

Regarding the truck, I'm planning to leave it at stock ride height, add sway bars and power steering. We haven't decided on a color yet, but it was originally silver. I plan to repaint it in a 1967 color, just not sure which one.

Lately, I've been thinking that I want to swap an LS engine, rather than the 400. If I did, I'm not sure if I would run the MY6 or install a 4L60E. I plan to find some 71 or 72 six lug wheels to clear disc brakes, and am looking for a nice set of 67 dog dish hub caps for it.

Glad everything worked out Wes. I stopped by marks while your truck was under construction. He's place is a toy store for adults. The work he does is amazing. How do you like the fitment of your fender? Mine is pretty shot so I may just buy a brand new one. I recently sold a set of doors to George, I now see the nice green doors he wanted haha.

The fender looks good, but Mark did some tweaking on it. I think he had to wallow some of the mounting holes near the cowl. He also had to work the fender to close the width of the gap near the front of the hood. I think he had to move the door slightly forward to close the fender to door gap. They were counter part fenders picked-up from Dreamerz in Everett. I used fenders from Southern KY Classics on my previous 67. I liked the fit, but I do not have the eye or the standards of Mark.

The bed side was also a counter part, and it fit nice when we put the bed together. I regret buying just the bed and floor. In hindsight, I probably should have bought an entire bed kit, which would have allowed me to sell the other bed, which wasn't too bad.

George is a bit of a character. He almost talked me out of those doors, but I just couldn't do it. He had the truck looking good last time I saw it in his garage. He's already building another frame for it. He also picked-up his new bed from the same guy I bought my 400 from... small world. George is on the board, but I don't remember his user name.

Cool truck! I also have a NP 833 that I'm going to use in my '68. I just rebuilt it and the shifter, and I'll be putting in after Christmas.

BTW, rebuilding the shifter is super simple and costs $18. I bought the shim kit from this guy:

You only need a 9/16" and 5/8" wrench or socket and a flathead screwdriver to do it and it took me about 10 mins to do it.

It is a night and day difference and does not feel sloppy anymore.

I finally made it back to WA to get my truck. It has been sitting since December.

The plan was simple enough: fly there and if it starts, load it up with my remaining tools and drive it back to Burbank (in So. Cal).

I didn't make it to the house until 1:30 AM. I hooked the battery up and she fired right up. I let her run while I loaded the truck, then I shut her down for the night. I originally had a full four days planned for the trip, which allowed time to swap out my inoperable speedometer and install my driver's door mirror.

Unfortunately, I got assigned a last minute business trip to Tupelo (flying out at 0700 Sunday), which mandated I leave Thursday so I would have time to get a truck and trailer in case there were any problems.

Truck ran good the whole way, used 2 quarts of oil in 1100 miles, but only got 12 mpg. I suspect it was the extra weight and the fact that I was driving 75 mph (just a guess, but I kept pace with the fast moving traffic) most of the way. The little 283 was screaming thanks to the 3.73 gears and 235/75R/15 tires. I've gotten 16 mpg, with no extra weight, by keeping it between 55-60 MPH.

I'm going to check the plugs and re-set the mixture screws for the so Cal heat. I won't be able to get started on her until August.
