straight six interchangeabilty

straight sixes. right now I have an 84 with 250 CID integeral head.
I need an engine and because i am going to sell the truck i am trying to make it easy on myself (for once!). I'm not too worried about the exhaust side but what engines are a direct bolt in for the 250 . brackets/ pulleys, etc. . I hear a lot about 292s but they have been around so long are they the same physically as the 250 or the old 235 series engines. ?

I was pretty sure the 194/230 series was the same but not sure on the 292's. thanx . DAVE

The 292 motor mounts are offset unlike the 250 that are straight across from each other. The 235 should be an easy replacement. I believe the only real difference in actual appearance is the 235 has a longer block.

I replaced the broken 292 that was in my truck when I bought it with a 250, thinking it would be an easy swap. I should have gone straight to the V8 for all the work it took.

ok so now I know it's a 250 only. Now my problem is finding a good 20 year old engine cheap, and I'm the type the has to hear it run! thanx, DAVE

The 194, 230 and 250 are the same blocks and mounts. The 250 is the best choice. The 292 has a different mount on the right side, and is taller.

The older 235/261/216 are not interchangeable with the newer block. They are wider blocks.

For more info, Leo Santucci has a book on the newer sixes, with a lot of good info. Chevrolet Inline Six-Cylinder Power Manual. It's $14 at amazon.

You can rebuild your '80s lower block (rotating assembly) and bolt on a non-integral head from an earlier year (pre-'75).
That will give you the ability of using aftermarket high performance equipment like headers, 4Bbl carb, Clifford or Offy intake. Heads from '67 to '74 250s should be your search target. Newer valves/hardened valve seats should be installed to update for unleaded gas.

The 250 was still in use through the 80's in work vans. I see plenty of them in junk yards all the time.
I am asuming they are 250 ci though.
