Column shifter question

The other day I decided to put my shifter back on the column. I went out to my dads old 69 chevy with a 6 cylinder in it and took the rods off. I connected them up on mine and it seems they are to long. My question is did V8's and 6 cylinders have rods of different lengths connecting to the transmission?

I'm not 100% sure but since the I6 sets the engine (therefore tranny) back a few inches, it's a safe bet the I6 rods are longer. Also, 67/68 3 speed trannys are different then the 69-up syncho'd 1st gear kind but since your donor is a 69, it should have same 3 speed as your 72.
