Who sells the deepest bolt in C- notch?

I purchased CPP's notch on eBay (see pic). It only moves the axle up 1-1/4". Almost doesn't seem worth the trouble. From looking at pix of other manufacturers it appears there are some deeper ones. I have searched threads and manufacturers descriptions but definitive measurements are hard to pin down. Anyone have some hard numbers on other options? Also, access to the top of the frame is impossible so bolts have to be on the side and bottom.

Making something custom is not an option for me. Paying someone to make one would be too expensive. I'm not too concerned about compromising the strength of the frame, or reduced hauling / towing capacity so save your keystrokes.

Re: Who sells the deepest bolt in C- notch?

Thanks J Knight! That appears to be at least an inch more than the CPP one I have.

Not sure how much actual clearance but the dif will hit the bed floor before the axle hits the notch. This is with the leafs under load and mounted up 3in.

I used western chassie on my 79 and it was at least as deep as the McGaughys.

The only C notch I would ever use is Porterbuilt's. Read this thread before you make your decision: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=457037

Re: Who sells the deepest bolt in C- notch?

I have a western chassis notch in my truck and it's so deep that when I bagged it I had to actually insert an adjustable bump stop into it so that my rearend didn't hit the bed floor when I let the back down.

Re: Who sells the deepest bolt in C- notch?

McGaughys looks like the right choice. Western Chassis has bolts on the top and that is near impossible for me. Also the images shown for WC are inconistent so it's uncertain what I would be getting.

After seeing c-notches being run for almost 20yrs and not a single failure I can say I'm perfectly happy and trust correctly installed notches. I tow and haul constantly with my 98 which also runs a western chassie notch. I overloaded the crap out of the 79 with a ton or more of gravel [no idea how the tires held] and the notch was fine.

They do fail. May not be a common thing but it does happen.

the height of the frame is arguably the most important part of its strength. A very deep notch takes that strength away. You only buy the notch once. Why not spend the extra few bucks to get the best one out?

I'm calling BS on that pic. There is no notch in that pic. Just a cut frame.

Re: Who sells the deepest bolt in C- notch?

Looks like something was welded to the frame close to the notch. It looks like it is in a shop for repairs. Doesn't really matter to me. I would never C notch a truck. I just think you should buy the sturdiest notch you can. Its not like its that expensive over the other options.

Re: Who sells the deepest bolt in C- notch?

You can clearly see there is just a cut frame, no c-notch installed. And I'm not saying it doesn't happen, I've seen non-rusted, non-cut, oem frames break. Anything can happen. Would I run a factory made c-notch in a 1ton towing a 5th wheel at capacity? No, I'd get a custom, triangulated and reinforced notch, but for a 1/2ton I don't see any problems.

That is the worst argument against a notch I have EVER seen. Clearly that truck was butchered...look at the vertical weld ahead of the "notch", no reinforced notch installed, and it looks like the cuts were done by Ray Charles. Notches work perfectly fine, when properly installed.

Re: Who sells the deepest bolt in C- notch?

I'm not saying don't notch your truck... My advice was to read the post that shows you lose 80% of the strength of the frame and to buy the strongest C notch you can find (i.e. Porterbuilt). Its your truck to do what you want with it.

It seems that I may have struck a nerve with what I had to say so I will quietly exit this thread

I don't think you struc a nerve, but the pic of the taco'd frame with a caption that "notches do fail"...when clearly there was no notch installed, just cut out...doesn't make a valid point. I don't think ANYONE here would say to cut/notch the frame and NOT reinforce with fabrication or any bolt in aftermarket kit.

Re: Who sells the deepest bolt in C- notch?

It looks to me like they put a flange in there so I'm not sure how it's all that different than a (poorly done) notch.

That's an odd failure mode, I sure wouldn't expect that much bending on a lowered truck either. I imagine it was loaded pretty heavy and then bottomed out hard, repeatedly.

With all of the talk in this thread about Porterbuilt notches being rainbows and unicorns I went over to their website for a look-see.

Did I miss something or do they not sell a notch ? All I see are full step bridges.
