will 91 Camero 305 distrib work without ECU

will the 91 Camero 305 stock ECU controlled distributor work without ECU? I see no vacuum advance, so I suspect needs ECU and cam position sensor to work?

Or would I better off continue looking for older HEI smallbock distib? So far, not found one on craigslist...I am building up a 305 with Edelbrock manifold and carb since I dont want to fool with TBI. THis is second one I am building for 72, first one in my 65, works great, cheap, easy to find....

Use the older HEI, or just get a "Skip White" Distro off evilbay.

Did the 305 originally have TBI? You need a "melonized" distribitor for the roller cam.

You might want to swith the roller cam (if equipped) with a Vortec roller cam if out of vehicle.

There are litteraly 100's of thousands of HEI's out there... There are some decent ones in the aftermarket. Which is where I would be looking.

Not to mention Crane has a very nice electronic distributor which has recently been reissued Uses infra-red light instead of magnetic pulses for firing signal.

The 91 transmaro distributor does not use cam/crank position sensor and would work w/out ecu but may not run smoothly.

IF you could wire it to work, you will never be able to drive it. It has no vacuum advance, just a pickup in the dist. You would need something like a msd box to get the stock Distro to work. Better buy a new/used one and be done.
