Steering Box Spline?

I need to order the universal joint from the box to steering shaft. I have a GM 525 manual box. I've tried counting splines, measured the shafts several times . The universals come in various sizes ( 3/4" , 5/8", 9/16" ) & splines ( 26 , 30 , 36 ) What is the correct dia. & spline? The box came from a '76 chevy truck . I also have a box from a '64 corvette that has the same shaft & spline ,Thanks in advance

Re: Steering Box Spline?

I believe the truck box is 3/4-36. You can check by measuring the diameter and counting the splines in 1/4 of the diameter x 4.

Re: Steering Box Spline?

If you have a 525 then you have an 86 or later box and it should be 3/4-36. If you have a 1976 box it should be a 122 with a 3/4-30, The 64 vette is a 122 and has a 3/4-30. The 525 and 122 look the same except for the spline. It was changed to 525 in 86 when the spline changed to 3/4-36

Re: Steering Box Spline?

Thanks Kevin & Dave ,where the shaft comes out of the box it measures 3/4 but tapers down at the spline. I get a 11/16 measurement there. Trying to count splines is a different story, never get the same count twice!!! I'm going to try a 3/4 30 STEVE

Trust me, I understand!!! I still call my granddaughter by her mothers name half the time. She just answers and moves on.

I also checked my steering set up at lunch. My box is a 74 3/4 ton 4WD unit and it is 3/4 -36. That also seems to be the standard for after market stuff like Borgsen.

If yours is a power box then yes it would be 3/4 36. Manual 74 box should be 3/4 30

It's power so that explains the difference.
