Aftermarket Wiring Harness??? Which to buy??

Doing a little research and I know Painless Wiring makes a kit for $499 and then I just found Chevy Duty also sells one for $299.... anyone use a chevy duty harness? I wonder why there is a $200 dollar difference? Any input would be great.

Is the Chevy Duty one a universal unit? I have the Painless kit...pretty slick kit and fairly easy to install...and I don't like electrical work.

The chevy duty one is more universal. It was designed for hot rods. They have one specifically designed for use on our trucks. I think the main difference is the painless harness disconnects at the firewall Like the factory harness), that way you can lift the front clip off without disconnecting the individual wires. The other one (the 299 one) doesn't offer that feature. Your external cab engine wiiring is hard wired to the fuse box without a disconnect. From what I have seen both types are very good quality and install about the same. I think it comes down to wether you want the disconnect idea or not.

Also look at hotrodwires.com they have the universal kit as well but may have one like Painless wiring without the cost.

I guess I didn't read the details of the harness from Chevy Duty, it does seem to be "universal" which I don't want, I'd like a harness made for the truck...... thanks for the info guys, looks like painless may be the winner.

This is the one I am thinking of this morning.
http://www.gemstreetrods.com/Wire%20Kit%20Photos.htm

I am not sure but I think they may be the company that does the Chevy Duty one. I know sevral folks that have used them and like them alot. As easy as the painless, just lacking the disconnect is all.

Re: Aftermarket Wiring Harness??? Which to buy??

I used the express wiring kit from Ron Francis and i´m happy with it.
The only thing is that the fusepanel is a little bigger than the factory one and i have to fill all the holes in the firewall! But you have 4 cuircuits that you can change from igniton hot to constant hot just by moving the fuse all wires are labeled every few inches and different connectors are included for different lightswitches or columnconnectors! The fusepanel includes relays for flashers, horn and electric fan.A new lightswich is also in with a nice aluminumhandle and a new junctionblock! The wires are packed in different numbered bags each with instructions.Installation was pretty straight forward, the tricky part was to hide the wires in looms and move them as far out of sight as possible!
The price is 399 $ at http://www.ronfranciswiring.com/

Re: Aftermarket Wiring Harness??? Which to buy??

Everyone (streetrod and custom auto shops) in my local area refers to "Painless" as PAINFUL. I am looking at a wiring kit from either "Ron Francis" or "Haywire". I am putting together a 68 Chevy Stretrod pickup and the use of a factory style wiring harness is NOT in my plans. I have Chevy Duty, LMC, and Manes truck parts within a 100 miles of my house, so their products are readily available.

If you pay close attention to the different brands around you'll see interesting similarties. Our shop uses E-Z wire. there is an off brand name of the exact same kit sold on ebay for 124.95 instead of the 399. price tag. 21 circuit kit with everything and marked color coded wires, easy as anything on the market today without the "painful" experience.
