1 electric fan enough?

Is one 16 inch electric fan enough if it's attached to the stock 4 core big block radiator? I was looking at the Zirgo 3000 cfm fan for around 200 bucks and was wondering if that would work. Haven't had a problem with overheating using the stock engine driven fan. No AC at this time, maybe in the future, a little over 600 HP, lots of 100 degree days

Re: 1 electric fan enough?

Ive got a single 16 in. rated at 2800 CFM & the 4 core radiator. It runs a little hotter then I like in traffic with the A/C on. It has never caused a problem but I would go for a dual fan setup if I did it again.

I have a 18" fan I just installed last week out of a Mini van for $40.00 bucks. It's hooked to the AC fan switch to the relay which runs only when the fan is on. It's keeping plenty of air moving on the condensor to keep the truck cool on these 100 degree day at 40 degree's inside even while sitting stil.

Re: 1 electric fan enough?

Ive got a 19 inch fan out of a Mercury grand marque. I believe it was 2000 or so. The car ran an electric and a mecahnical fan. This was for the air unit.

I got this fan for 25.00. mounted it up and it works great. I am not running a mechanical fan with the small block. I have an alum radiator and a 160 degree thermostat. It never goes over 170 degrees , even in traffic.

Re: 1 electric fan enough?

I always hear to use a shroud for best cooling, so I picked up the grand cherokee electric fan after reading this post: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=254617.

I don't have it in since my blazer currently isn't running, but it fits the stock shroud perfectly.

Re: 1 electric fan enough?

I'm putting a single 18" or so fan out of a Volvo 850 T5 in mine on a homemade aluminium shroud. This is replacing a single 12" fan with shroud from some car or other that the previous owner chucked on there, it only covers half the radiator and seems to cool OK so I guess the bigger more efficient one (its a curved multibladed job against the current one which has I think four straight blades) will do fine. Its being controlled by an adjustable derale controller with the temp switch going in the intake manifold next to the thermostat and the current manual switch in the cab will be used as a manual override.

Re: 1 electric fan enough?

You can use a Mercury Cougar 4.6 or a T Bird fan. New at Rockauto its about $78. Far better than any Zirgo in price and dependability.

Here is a writ eup on it in a 72 C10

That is close to what mine looks like. Mine had a low speed and high speed wire on it. The motor was thicker though. I hooked up the low speed. The high speed was just to much I thought!
I hooked mine up in front of the radiator though because I didn't have enough room between the motor fan and radiator.

Re: 1 electric fan enough?

Been a while since I posted on here but I had another question. Do any of you people who are running the Mopar fan have a part number handy? And any idea how many CFM it puts out? Surely a stock mechanical fan cannot move more than 1000 CFM if even that at an idle (which is what I am most worried about heating up at as at more than an idle there will be air flow through the radiator from driving) don't you all think? Also, (this may be a dumb question) is it possible to run TOO cool?? Not worried about winters as it is rarely colder than 30 here. Am thinking about putting in addition to electric fan a 3 or 4 core all aluminum radiator as well as a high flow water pump. If I run the fan all the time while truck is running with this setup will that be a problem?
P.S if the fan does not fit shroud I will build one for it

Re: 1 electric fan enough?

So reading around the net and supposedly a stock mechanical fan only moves about 800 CFM. My question now is does anyone have an electric fan like the Cherokee fan on a big block with long water pump? Does it fit? I hear they are a really tight fit. From what I can tell there is only 10.5 inches of clearance from the front of block to back of radiator and the long water pump is around 7.5 inches long. Doesn't give much room!!!!!

What did you do with the funny looking wire pigtail. Did you just cut it apart? And use a Jegs Setup?

If your cooling system is in good shape and you have the proper thermostat too cool will not be a problem.

Andy4639, that fan is a puller right? How did you get it to push the air through the radiator?

Re: 1 electric fan enough?

Some on here have said that an aluminum headed engine needs to have a hotter thermostat then a iron headed one. Is that true and if so why? I have heard 195 degree thermostat!!

Re: 1 electric fan enough?

I've never heard that engine temp is set differently for aluminum heads vs. iron. However, I do know that to improve thermal efficiency and improve combustion hotter is better. (Of course, not to the point that engine damage occurs!)
