I would like to put a later model steering column in my 72 C-10 what one would fit the best?

What are you trying to get out of the swap?

A square body column physically fits but will require metal surgery to remove the square threaded mounting nuts that get in the way of our dash mount bracket and adding the registration slot to the column to keep it from rotating once installed like our stock parts have.

The ignition switch and linkage rod will need to be modified to work if you want ignition on the column. The linkage rod also runs into clearance issues with our dash mount area. You could just make the column ignition switch assembly go away and keep the stock one on the dash.

With this swap you gain more available tilt columns and the control stalk / turn signal lever that can operate both cruise control and delay wipers. You just have to figure out how to get the rest of those systems into your truck and make them work with it.

The 88-94 truck column might fit too but I haven't tried. The newer versions are just too bulky to fit.

#1 to remove ignition switch from the dash
#2 have a collapsible column
#3 have something that is different

I removed a late model Cadillac column from my Burban when I got it. (Photo 1). One issue you may not have thought of is the cutout for the factory column in the guage package is fairly narrow and will have to be modified to allow a fatter column to pass through. (Upper guage package in photos 2&3). The same problem exists for the underdash mount.
