Converting to 4x4
Ok I have a 70 half ton long bed that I am thinking of converting to 4x4.
So can I just get a solid axle from any 67-87 chevy 4x4? Can I also just get a rear axle off any 67-87 4x4 and just bolt in the leaf springs and perchise (i have coils now) And will I need to get a different trans crossmeber or anything? And will I need to do something to my cab floor? ( its an automatic 2wd now)? And I have some full lenght hedmen hedders. Will those still work?

If your 2wd is a small block, it will have the low hump. 4wd and BB have the high hump. The hi hump bolts in and I think the low is one solid piece, so there will be some modification needed. Can't help with the rest. Someone more knowledgable will probably weigh in on this.

I think that it has pretty much been determined here that the swap would be lots easier with a 4x4 frame and just swapping body parts. Swapping the parts over can be done but will take a lot of drilling and measuring. And yes the floor will need a high hump or u will need a body lift for the cab to clear the TC.

Like MUDDER67 said it will be a lot of work. I`m working on one right now that had a leaf spring rear under it. But then I`m also putting a Big Block in at the same time.
Good luck ! Willis

Re: Converting to 4x4
Too bad you weren't closer to here either. Freind of mine has a 71 3/4 4x4 for sale as well, open knuckle w/discs, 4 speed/205, Eaton rear with Detroit and 4:56s. CST interior, rusty but not too bad for $500.
