67 4x4 w/ 396?

newby here with a question. I'm looking at this truck but I just don't think it's worth the asking price so I'm looking for some experienced opinions. it's a 67 4x4 4speed with a 69 396bb, runs, power brakes and steering. everything seems to work ok. so what's it really worth? I'll get pics up in a min.(or not.my computer says no,I'll try later). some rust and dings, needs body work, straight though, seats are ripped up ,spotty primer grey, looks like an old used farm/work truck should look. (oops longbed fleet side)
thanks in advance...Jon

Looks like a long bed from the pics. It looks to be in pretty decent shape. Whats the asking price, if you dont mind sharing?

Re: 67 4x4 w/ 396?

You may already know this but the motor is not factory original. No 4x4's came with the big block in the 67-72 era. The seats appear to be from a 73 + GM truck, but the picture doesn't give enough of the seat to tell what year for sure.
I would say you have a $1,000 to maybe $1,500 truck there.

What is the red truck next to this one?

Re: 67 4x4 w/ 396?

That is NOT a $4K truck. NOT EVEN CLOSE.

I have a 2 wheel drive 68 Suburban that is 98% RUSTFREE and a daily driver.

You could buy it for $4K

I would have to agree.

While it is a big block (not factory) and it is 4 wheel drive, and it looks pretty decent....I would maybe come close to paying $4000 IF it is a RUST FREE truck.

Re: 67 4x4 w/ 396?

It looks like a piece together truck, no way worth $4K not even half that IMO. Motor looks like it may be 70's 454 possibly with the ALT being on right side. Power brake booster is 71 and up. 67's didn't have PS so that was added. I would check and see if frame is a 67, the way you can do that is check vin plate and frame numbers. Does it have a disc brake frontend? It may just be a old body put on a newer frame possibly too. Good luck though on whatever you decide

Re: 67 4x4 w/ 396?

If it is a '67 frame, I believe you would have to cut the frame to get the big block to fit if I'm not mistaken.

Any 4x4 frame from 67-72 would have to be cut to fit the BB. WES

Re: 67 4x4 w/ 396?

Hey illtemper, that truck has been on craigslist for over a year, probably approaching 2 years. Probably because the price is a little high, but I haven't seen it other than in pics. And I am assuming that the owner is using the same pics for the past 2 years because its easy, but you would think after all that time if it hadn't sold you would snap some other pics. I would venture to say it hasn't moved or doesn't run/drive well enough to do so. Not sure what the ad says though.

I think dan42 might be right because I have read that before about having to cut the frame, but my 67 swb frame has a 454 in it and the frame is uncut...but the motor mount perches are small block ones that have been rebuilt and beefed up to make the big block sit in there...not stock.

If you are going for a stocker or stock restore, this is far from it. I agree its been pieced together...but at what extent, its hard to say. Like teeitup said, it could be a older body on a newer frame/drivetrain. Its STILL a 4x4 with a big block though, which if its done decently and in running/driving condition is worth something I think...mainly because I like big blocks in trucks. Now 4k...?...I don't know about that! Depends on how bad you want it and how much rust there is...

By the way, there are a number of trucks like this around the Helena area that come up for sale. There was a way nicer truck that was a 4x4 with a 67 front clip up here for sale last fall...I think they wanted 4K or so...it looked pretty good and might still be floating around. You could put up a "wanted to buy" in the Helena craigslist and see if the owner bites...?

Whichever way you go, good luck! And let us all know.

sincere apologies,I will try to rectify that shortly by paying.

don't know how I missed it,I look on CL all the time but just found it. not really looking for stock(not really even looking),just love the body style.
I was going to offer him 3 but I think I have enough projects for now.

thanks for all the replies...Jon

Probably because he is looking at buying and doesn't own it.
Wes, how do you mean any frame needs to be cut? I set a 402 in place of the 350 in my 70 4x4. It was tight, but it went. Just curious.

Re: 67 4x4 w/ 396?

It's been my experience that when installing a BB in the 4x4s with stock manifolds, I had to cut the engine bracket. If I installed them with headers, I had to cut the frame to make room for the headers. I guess that what I should have said is if you are cutting the frame in a 67 to install a BB, then you will have to in the 68-72s also. The frames are the top section of the 4x4 frames where the engine sets from 67-72 are the same. Not like the 68-72 2 wheel drive frames where the frames are natched to accomidate the BBs. WES

I had just bought a front clip off a 67 and was curious how bad I had been ripped off...haha!...so I guess it is a little different. It didn't really matter too much, I figured $50 for a rust free one was a good deal no matter which way you look at it.

If you paid 50 bucks for a good 67' front clip..........then I got ripped off.

Just to add my experience, I did not cut the engine bracket on my '68 with factory manifolds. I did trim about 3/8" off of the top of the frame rail for about 8 inches to clear the passenger side manifold.
