Distributor wiring

I recently gutted my old points distributor and installed an electronic conversion. The coil I have requires a balast resistor. I got key on power for the module from the yellow wire that was going to the + side of the coil and I installed a balast resistor to the coil. Everything seems to work properly, but... from a cold start (first start of the day)... it takes three starts to stay running. I have since discovered that there is a resistance wire in the circuit that the yellow wire feeds from. Would I get better results from running a separate key on 12v line to the distributor module and eliminating the redundant balast?

Re: Distributor wiring

I would just elimminate the ballast resistor and use the existing resistor wire that is already in the harness.

Re: Distributor wiring

Do you think there's any harm in powering the distributor from the resistance wire?

Thats what its intended for, I installed the Crane XR-I conversion in my 69 with the stock resistor wire.

Re: Distributor wiring

According to Pertronix tech guys, you can power the module off of either straight 12V before the resistor or after the resistor (or resistor wire), but if you accidentally leave the switch on, the resistor can sometimes save the module from meltdown if you have it wired after the resistor. This happend to me on my 68 Camaro the night before I got married. I had the module wired in without the resistor wire and left the switch on the night before. The day of my wedding, my dad and I were in tuxes working on the distributor. Fun stuff.

Re: Distributor wiring

I installed the Pertronix kit and I ended up buying their Flame Thrower coil ($36). You can wire their coil straight to a 12V keyed source, no resistor, no BS. Then you can open up your plug gap to that of an HEI for a better burn.

Re: Distributor wiring

I've had very bad luck with Flame thrower coils. They usually start to leak and then break down when hot.
