new steering box/gear
I will be in need of a new steering gear for the 72 in the near future and was wondering where everyone got theirs.
Looking for a good price but quality is a must! Looking for a new quick ratio box. Thanks |

I have the Early Classic quick ratio box on my C10. It took a full turn out lock to lock. Not cheap, but it's a nice piece.

A few years back advance auto parts carried one. I think it had a lifetime warranty.

I got mine from Napa, $175 plus the old one for the core.

New AGR boxes are available in variable ratio and are bolt in if you already have power steering. They are around $325 with no core required.

I've also been looking at purchasing a new steering box. I really didn't want a vairable ratio and I wondered it the 12.7 might be a little touchy for a short wheel base truck at high speed. I noticed that Flaming River has a box for our trucks using the old Olds 442 14/1 ratio. It's a lot of $$$$$ but just what I have been looking for. Next week I'm going to head over to the local dealer and see what kind of deal I can get. Might just go with Flaming River from the column to the the steering box.

They are not any more touchy than any other steering gear. I have been using them for quite some time now as have many of my customers. We all love them because you can navigate parking lots a lot easier. Our gears are better than the ones that you can buy at Napa, Auto Zone, Schucks, and etc. When they are remanufactured, the cases are board out and oversized bearings are installed for a longer lasting, stronger gear. Wes, these gears sound good although I have a few questions.
It's been my experience that the remanfactured boxes loosen up after a year or two. This is why I was mainly looking for a new box. how do these hold up over time. Any long term customer feedback or personal experience? Thanks, Denny |
