Re: Transmission oil cooler

its inside your radiator. You can get the cooler seperately, but a new 4 row rad can be had for like 150 at auto zone, and a cooler alone with the labor to install it would be close to that, and you'd have an old rad still.

Re: Transmission oil cooler

Andy is saying that your trans cooler is inside the radiator. To replace it, the radiator has to be unsoldered and disassembled. He's saying it is likely cheaper to get a new radiator, which will come with new cooler inside of it.

If you have a cooler mounted externally from the radiator, it is an add on from an aftermarket source. In that case, Summit has literally hundreds to choose from depending on size and hose fitting configuration you want.

Re: Transmission oil cooler

...or you could just go to virtually any automotive supply house and buy a transmission cooler. Transdapt made the one that I am using. I just mounted it on the front side of my A/C condensor, which is in front of my 4-row core radiator. No, it hasn't overheated. I recommend it.

I've gotten several really high quality ones off of junked police cars at the local salvage yard. Just kick the grille out of it and there is usually a nice fat cooler ripe for the pluckin.

Re: Transmission oil cooler

Here's a store bought aftermarket that was installed after the 4 speed was taken out & a TH350 was installed.
And, as Chevloray said, available just about anywheres.

Re: Transmission oil cooler

are these external coolers plumbed to the radiator at all? or are they stand alone coolers with only the lines to the auto trans? Thanks

Mine is a stand alone because the original radiator had no cooler in it.
I have seen, in one instance, where the guy decided to pull a trailer (with his car) and came out of the cooler in the radiator & then plumbed to an external cooler & then back to the transmission.
I don't know if it really helped or not. I just happened to be in a shop where the car was being worked on.

Is it plumbed to something? What?

Re: Transmission oil cooler

I have a four row aluminum radiator without a cooler so we installed a B&M cooler on the core support. So far so good in the hot humid florida climate..

Re: Transmission oil cooler

An auxiliary cooler should always be run in conjunction with the heat exchanger (cooler in the radiator). The heat exchanger works best because water dissipates heat better than air. This was told to me by a design engineer for GM.
