Heater Box clean up ideas
I've got my heater box and AC box off right now. What are some of the things you guys have done to clean this up? Also can I find the puddy that goes on the condensor line?

I use alternate washing of the box with mineral spirits and Simple Green.
Unless they have been in the sun they will clean up nicely. If yours has been bleached by the sun, clean it well and clear coat it. The black stuff is available from a good AC parts supplier. Jim

The putty you are looking for is discontinued from GM now, the only places that I have been able to get the correct stuff is from Ricks 1st generation Camaro Parts in Georgia which comes in a NPD package- National Parts Depot. The NPD is cheaper than the same stuff from Ricks but Ricks are nice folks to deal with. The roll that you get is a little smaller than what came originally on your truck but will work. Use warm saopy water and the bath tub to clean the housing then locate cast blast or cast coat - NAPA details line of spray paint - it will put your color close to original -this is what mine looks like after this process.

They were originally a raw fiberglass. They grey with age to a lighter version. The cast color is the closest that I have came across that looks as original. The box on my 71 (second pic.) is the first one I did, that pic. is recent- last 3 months- truck has been finished since 2000, the first box is the box that is going back on my 72 4x4. I think the second one actually turned out better than the first- it looks better now as I have since installed the Harrison sticker on the outside of the box

I think our best source for OEM original replacement parts for factory AC is: Old Air, out of TX. They have some nice systems & parts for our trucks.

The material on the refrigerant line is termed "cork-tape". It is an insulating material used in HVAC. It should be available in roll form at an HVAC supply house.

Thanks for the info, guess I will just clean up the box and paint it. They were a bit faded and have a bunch of overspray on them. 71 Super, I will try and come close and match your skills.

I used Gibbs oil on mine and its perfect. I think paint takes away from the “original” look- JMO. Pictures here on the bottom of this thread. And to answer your question…No it doesn’t collect dust. It’s sitting out in the garage now, and my powder coated parts are collecting more dust than my heater box! This stuff is awesome.

3m Strip Caulk is what wraps the condenser line! The same as the stuff used to seal off the fire wall.
