Wink who's running a 305

I have a chance to buy an extremely low mileage 305 for my 72. Just curious how many guys are running 305S and how they are working out for them. My although and psychological brackets from my original 350 will work on this right? Looking for feedback. Thanks alot

Re: who's running a 305

Yes, your brackets should work fine. What is the 305 out of? 305 gets a bad name, but can be an OK engine. For instance the 305 from an 88 Impala has a roller cam and is the same longblock as an IROC Camaro.

I have a 305 in my C20 and it has plenty of power and runs great. I just put a TPI setup on it from junkyard parts and I am very satisfied with it.

Re: who's running a 305

Small block Chevy motors are some of the greatest motors ever. 305s are small block Chevys. They are bigger than 265s and 283s and smaller than the rest. The bigger, the more power. It all depends on how much power you are looking for

Re: who's running a 305

The best engines I've ever had was 305s and inline 6s my daily driver is currently 305. Also have a H.O. 305 in my 86 monte ss never had the valve covers off has 180,000 + runs like a top with 0 oil used between changes, and it was abused in my younger days. Always gonna be some haters but who cares not everyone is horsepower crazy.

The 305 (TBI) in my 89' camaro runs like a champ. 150k on it, starts no matter what the temp, uses no oil, gets me fantastic gas mileage.

Re: who's running a 305

I'm dropping a Camaro 305 TPI and T5 in a '69 GMC. It's getting the '80 C20 front brake set-up, and the power steering, too. The body is really straight, needs paint, but the driveline sux! It's a very sick 307 with a 465, the power drums also suck and if I keep driving it as is, I'll have a set of Popeye arms! The 4.11 Dana will be just right for the set-up- that's about the only thing, driveline-wise, I'm keeping.

It's not that I don't like 350's or LS engines, it was sitting around and had a fresh overhaul and the GMC needed some help.

Actually you are somewhat half right. Here's the three engine specks.

265 bore is 3.75 & stroke is 3.00

283 bore is 3.875 & stroke is 3.00

305 bore is 3.736 & stroke is 3.00

350 bore is 4.00 & stroke is 3.48

So the 283 has the biggest Bore and the 305 has the Smallest Bore and both the 305 & 350 have the longest Strokes. This is why the 305 has more bottom end "grunt" than the 265 & 283.

Lets not forget the 307 its bore is 3.88 & stroke is 3.25. So there you have it. just saying too keep the records straight.

Oh yah all most forgot I too have a 305 came out of a 89 Firebird now in my 68 C10, haven't yet looked at the specs, not a bad engine though

Re: who's running a 305

Had a 305 in my truck when I first bought it. It was worn out, I suppose, but it was anemic, and it drank gas like a turbine. No idea what It came out of, but it would have made a decent boat anchor.

Jerked it out at the earliest opportunity and replaced with the family pet '69 327.

Had a great 307 once--even worn out, it embarrassed that 305.

YMMV, of course, but I wouldn't use a 305 on a lawnmower, I don't care what the badges on the fenders say. Just MNSHO, worth exactly what you paid for it.

Re: who's running a 305

I have a 82,305 in my 68 until I rebuild the original 327.
It's a pretty good engine so far.
And,I have newer(87) 305 with the roller cam in my G-20 van that runs like a top.
305's got a bad reputation years ago because of soft cams that wore out really fast.
I've a 82,K-10 I bought new.I still have the 305 that came in it.Towed a travel trailer with it until the compression rings wore out, then went with a 454.
All small block Chevies are designed on the same basic block, they just shift the internals around to get different power ranges and fuel requirements to suit the application.
And,I also have a 351-C,V/6.

Re: who's running a 305

A 305 isn't a bad engine in a daily driver. They can be set up too make more power like any other sbc.
But of course it's never gonna be a 350.

I severely abused the one in my 77 caprice and it allways ran good.

If you've got 20 minutes to kill I'd love to see a thread showing what you used, how you did it, what it looks like, etc...

I assume some more modern V6 gave its electronics to the task?

Some 80s camaros had tpi 305s in them factory. Not from a v6. Just to clarify we are talking about the 305 small block v8 not the old gmc v6.

Re: who's running a 305

I had a 305 in an 88 Z28 that i drove in h.s. and then the first 4 years in the Marines. It was rebuilt before it went in the camaro, it wasnt fast but ran good. It went from Missouri to N Carolina and then the return trip to base about a 100 times. It racked up miles and ran like a top. No complaints about a 305 from me

305 are not all that bad. Always saw it's inception as a sensible move on GMs part since the same 350 rods could be used, well as the crank with minor balance changes. Let's face it. MUCH better engine than the tiny bore & valve wielding 267 it was designed to replace. Though they did share the same crank castings, with even more material removed from the crank counterweights.
