Another silly question regarding defroster vents.

Ever since I bought reproduction defroster vents and new duct hoses I cannot for the life of me get them to stay flush and in place. Its to the point I'm considering gluing them down. They have the two tabs on the side the I'm assuming were designed to hold them in place, but my problem is they don't both touch at the same time in the vent hole. It's either one side or the other causing the other side to raise up approx. 1/8 - 1/4 of an inch. I have the duct hose on as far as it will go.(It is over their protruded tab on the vent housing) I then have attempted to reach under the dash and work the duct and vent down into the vent cutout but they still pop up and out. Am I missing something. I've compared the orientation with other trucks and I know I have them installed correctly. Ie.... LH & RH & front to back.

There are two types of vent hose, the stiff stuff and the soft stuff. You must have the stiff stuff. I think one is plastic and the other is a treated fabric like the originals. The plastic are the stiff ones.

Re: Another silly question regarding defroster vents.

I have the same problem....it is like the defroster vents are too narrow for the opening....I got mine from Southern Kentucky Classics. They asked me to send them back. I am glad that I'm not the only one with this issue. Let us know how yours turn out.

I bought mine from http://www.classicparts.com/default.asp I also got the original cloth style vent hose no problems or complaints. All of the parts I have gotten from them are of a good quality.

Re: Another silly question regarding defroster vents.

Thanks for the responses, I have the original stiff fabric type duct hoses. They are a bugger to deal with. I guess I will buy and try a different pair. I don't remember where I bought these. It most likely was LMC because I have purchased more from them then anybody else.

Re: Another silly question regarding defroster vents.

Heat the little tabs and bend them out slightly, they'll catch just fine...I used a really floppy type of hose not sure what it's made of, but it acts more like a bloody slinky, this adds weight to the back of my vents and holds them down...sometimes when the heat is on it drops down from under the dash like a snake and scares the bejesus outta me...not sure why, we don't have snakes here.

Re: Another silly question regarding defroster vents.

I got the ones from early classic and they snap in with no problems. Also bought the original hoses from them.

Well, a little heat and after slightly bending the tabs outward and then letting them cool they work great. Popped right in place.

I'll also have to try it that on my original one that I have on my 68.

re. snakes: wish we didn't have them over here. I opened the door one morning and on the floor was a shedded snake skin! I suspect the bugger got in through the vent I left open and decided to get rid of his old coat in my truck...
