vin # on frame

OK, got a problem!!! I scraped the frame above PS box and then wire brushed it. There is NO vin number stamped in the frame. I've never seen this before???? I got 3 other trucks here scraped them and found vins. Anybody ever heard of this. Its on a 67 GMC. Thanks Randy

Re: vin # on frame

I got one with nothing by the PS box too, guess its time to get out the wire brush and mirror. I have seen one other without the VIN stamp, and it was also old ...67 or 68.

Re: vin # on frame

I've never seen it myself, but I've been told the 67s didn't have it on the front part of the frame.
Isn't it the inspectors problem to locate it?

Re: vin # on frame

Your in the right place as it should be about dead center of the engine on that drivers side rail. And the second one is just in front of the rear cab mount maybe 6 inches. Now I have seen some trucks without any stamped serial numbers and when I was in the body and frame business we changed out complete frames with new GM frames ordered in right from the GM dealer with of course no frame numbers. Re: vin # on frame

I got 2 67's here, but they are chevy's and they both have them by the ps box on top rail. Its real strange. I'm just worried about inspection guy, they are supposed to verify 3 places in Ks, title, vin plate, frame or glove box door spid label. It doesn't have a spid label on it. I scraped off a 70 GMC 4x4 I got and its where its supposed to be. I guess I'll haul it over there and hope for the best. I'm not unbolting the cab until they make me. Thanks guys, Randy

Re: vin # on frame

check on the right frame rail, about center of the left door. i know that mine is a 71 model, but it has the vin next to the steering box, on top of the frame around the drivers door area, and on the passenger side on the side of the frame. could that be where it is sometimes (but only on some trucks maybe?) i'll take a measurement and be right back.

Re: vin # on frame

back again, ok, about six inches behind the right front cab mount bracket, you will see a 5/8" or there abouts hole. the vin may be stamped into the frame below that hole.
it may or may not be there, but on mine it is. good luck to you, and let us know if you find it. Tony

Re: vin # on frame

Randy no , i am saying look on the side of the frame rail. on the out side. get down real low beside the truck, not under it,on the passenger side. and look at the front cab mount bracket that is welded to the frame. then look 6 inches further back toward the rear of the truck. you should see a hole about 5/8" in diameter. then go strait down about 2 or 3 inches. you should be looking at it. sorry for the dumb explantion i aint good at directions. lol !!

Re: vin # on frame

i know the part number is in that general location of my longhorn frame. I googled the number and it came back as one ton frame part number for a 67 - 72 chevy truck frame... or something like that. It's been a few years.

I also have heard people say that 67-68 GMC's didn't have the vin#'s stamped on the frame.

Re: vin # on frame

Other trucks/cars had this same issue. With my 1960 Corvette the Vin.# is located on the frame, drivers side just ahead of the drivers seat. When you pull the carpet back there is a black rubber plug about 2' in circumference which allows one to pull it out and with a light you'll be able to locate the Vin.#.

This might be the resolve to your problem to drill out 1 maybe 2 holes and plug them afterwards as this would allow access to view the Vin.#. Sure beats lifting the cab ....

esll.

Re: vin # on frame

I have a 67 bare frame I am builing right now and there is a set of numbers on the top of left frame rail between the engine and trans crossmembers... Didnt check to see if it is the VIN because it doesnt matter in PA.... Most likely covered by the cab I would think....

Re: vin # on frame

Its a partial VIN on the frame rail. If I remember correctly it was "J" for Janesville and the sequence number. Not much else.

Obviously the plant and sequence number should match the VIN on the B pillar.
