Starter Noise

My starter began to make a weird noise yesterday morning when I went out to start the truck. It's making the "click" noise that a starter makes when the battery is dead, but the starter is turning over and will start the truck while the noise is produced. Could this be the solenoid going bad?? Thanks in advance for your help.

Re: Starter Noise

Sounds right to me...Solenoids love to act up in colder weather.

Re: Starter Noise

I'm dating myself, but I remember the original Delco solenoids could be taken apart and the copper contact turned around for a "renewed" surface. In other cases it could be sanded and cleaned.

Now they're relatively cheap and I believe, the end cap is riveted.

I have had some problems with the connections comming loose on mine in the past when I first bought it. Just had to tighten them back down.

Re: Starter Noise

Buddy at work had the same issue. It was grounded to the intake whick had oil on it. He went and bought a new starter $200....cleaning the ground wire FREE.

Re: Starter Noise

Sounds like you could spend some time cleaning some of your connections ---to ensure a good circuit when you use the starter. The clicking tells me the solenoid is not getting all of the voltage necessary to make a good connection.

Re: Starter Noise

I check all of the connections and didn't find anything out of the ordinary. I pulled it and had it bench tested at the parts house and when they ran the test the solenoid was making all kind of racket. They replaced the starter for free and all is well. Thank you all for the suggestions!
