Re: fuel filter ?

I run those cheap Fram inline filters that you can get at Walmart for about 3 bucks. I like to put them in the little section of rubber hose underneath the right rear corner of the cab rather than in the engine compartment.

Re: fuel filter ?

I put one of those fancy glass filters in the engine compartment and it looks real nice with all of the chrome and nice that you can see how clean or dirty your fuel is BUT location, location, location. I put mine about 6-8 inches South of the fuel rail between the carb and fuel pump and Tx Firefighter (Thanx Tx) quickly noticed it was very close to the valve cover. A BIG FIRE HAZZARD IF IT BREAKS.

I'm Going to change it over to the Fram also, but put it closer to the fuel pump opposed to the fuel rail.

Re: fuel filter ?

Oh boy, have I had a hard time with inline filters. I started off with a cheapo 2 piece glass filter from LMC; pretty much leaked from the start. Then I moved up to a 2 piece all metal Edelbrock filter; that was fine for about 6 months but then started to leak and nothing I did stopped it from leaking. Sooo, now I'm on my 3rd filter; this time it's a one piece plastic filter from NAPA and it's held up so far. I figure I'll just change out the whole filter once a year instead of messing with a two piece version.

Re: fuel filter ?

GUYS!!!!!!!!! use a Wix filter. Wix for any kid of filter that comes in contact with fluid basically. Well, i guess that would only be oil and fuel, but WIX is the way to go.

While I agree that Fram sucks, I feel they are plenty sufficient for fuel under these conditions. Three bucks at China Mart is good too.

I also agree that Wix is good.

Re: fuel filter ?

i am a el cheapo filter user myself, i prefer to use the clear ones, so you can see if they get alot of trash in them you can replace them. i like the clear ones because in case of a problem you can easliy diagnose whether or not fuel supply is an issue .With the cheaper ones, its probably a good idea to change them more often, IMHO, i have my filter right under the cab, if there is trash in the gas, this way it wont get into the fuel pump, where if there is a lot of trash may screw up the pump, at least over time, some may say that a filter after the pump is good in case some of the metal parts in the pump get rusty and the rust particles make there way to the carb, i have seen this before. i'll use this opportunity to bring something up, i am a culprit here too, but it is a good idea to stay away from rubber lines between the carb and pump, because when the rubber hoses get old, crack, fuel will spray all over, i have had the ends of rubber hose crack and start to leak fuel at the carb, of which i had replaced that hose like 5 years ago, this is why from the factory, the trucks came with hard lines pump to carb, i know, it is easier to put a filter there and to replace it instead of crawling under the truck. at least check those hoses occasionaly for cracks and pinholes, not trying to scold anyone here, i am guilty too, just dont want to see anyones truck go up in flames

You speak the truth. Something I'm noticing lately, is that fuel hose now days doesn't last as long as it used to. After a short while, the new stuff gets dry rotted. Twenty years ago, it lasted much longer. I don't know if it's the smog in the air or newer rubber formulations they're using.

Re: fuel filter ?

I run the clear Fram's as well, never had a leak. Im starting to wander if it's in the safest place though. Just about 8" off my Q-Jet and almost over the valve covers. Hmmmm....
