Anyone running a sm465?

Surely some of you are! Speak up. What kind of these traits to these transmissions have? Are they streetable? I've never driven one before, so I was wondering if one would give alright performance and drivability behind a mild 350. The truck will be a 2wd.

Re: Anyone running a sm465?

they are great for a 4x4 and work truck, they are the exact oppisite of what you should use in a street truck.

they where used in heavy one tons with 454s and heavy loads, it will handle whatever your 350 can throw at it.

Re: Anyone running a sm465?

When i was 18 i had a corrnet440 dodge it had a 318 in it but i put a 340 in still to heavy of a car for a small block.. so it was a blast to take dads 72 c/20 and race it. Which i have it now it is a 350 4bbl with sm4565 2wd i would get on the line and put it in 3 gear and when the light changed i would just put it to the floor and side step the clutch. Well that truck would out run some fast 327 impalas LOL! only had to shift once throught the 1/4. I had so much fun that summer with it to this day my dad still well not buy cooper tires he says there junk. Well i thought thay lasted preaty good but i would never of told dad that LOL!! So there fun to race just not that good at it. The next year i got a dodge charger with a 400 mag and i camed it up and put a posi in it so the tires started lasting a little longer on dads truck . it was a really good farm truck though.

Re: Anyone running a sm465?

They drive down the road fine, there are still thousands out there hitting the pavement every day. They also have the exact same final ratio (1:1) as most other trannies, including the 3 speeds and the TH350, TH400, and PG (for whatever reason, people like to think that SM465's have a lower final ratio than most other trannies...no...they have a lower 1st gear. Speaking of, 1st is good for traffic jams, and moving heavy loads, and offroading. Start in 2nd all other times (unless you are CrashEd, lol). They are pretty much indestructible. What else do you need to know? They are not car trannies by any means. Large clunky shifts are the norm. You cannot get a short throw shifter, aside from cutting the stocker (and good luck with that).

I love that story. I want to try that with my truck just once.

Re: Anyone running a sm465?

I removed a TH350 and installed a SM465 in my 70 c/10 34 years ago because the TH350 was going south. In 1993 I converted to 4x4 with a different SM465 not because there was anything wrong with it, it just didn't have a transfer case on it. They're great heavy duty transmissions. If you treat them right, they will last for ever.

Just don't try shifting one fast, it won't do it.

Re: Anyone running a sm465?

The SM465 is a tough tranny. They can handle a lot of torque and work well in short wheel base applications. The case is a top loaded/top shifting cast iron unit that is well ribbed for strength and measures 12" in length. The 6.55Granny gear is non-sychronized.
1st gear: 6.55:1
2nd gear: 3.55:1
3rd gear: 1.71:1
4th gear: 1:1
I've ran this transmission in many application including behind supercharged small blocks, strokers, and big blocks. The only failures I've experienced are a failed synchro in 3rd gear which let it pop out of gear, and the female 10 spline coupler stripping out. Both were due to old age. This trans will do best behind a motor creating a flat torque curve due to the big gear difference between 2nd and 3rd. Hope this helps!

Great tranny! as stated, 1st gear is freaking low! But the shift is almost quick. 2nd to 3rd, will take a while to get there, and is a hugh difference in gearing. But 3rd to 4th is nice.

With a 4X4, put the X-fer in low, the tranny in 1st, and you can get out and walk circles around your truck while it's busy going nowhere very fast...

Re: Anyone running a sm465?

Thanks guys.

1969 GMC, what transmission is under that 5 speed shift knob? Kind of spawning my curiosity. I've never really researched GM manuals.

The reason I ask if the tranny is worth using is because I found a complete 75 Chevy LWB for $250. I figured the whole front end would be usable for a disc swap, along with the power steering, power brakes, along with the sm 465 and ALL of the parts needed to switch it.

Re: Anyone running a sm465?

I got acouple trucks with them...............We were on a 1/2 ton kick with 3 spd sag's..........Most with floor shifters. I got used of them and then bought a 1-ton with a 465..........The 465 was tight still as it wasn't used much, but I didn't like it at first, but the more I used it I could live with it.

I got one in my K-20 that has seen alot of use and it is pretty sloppy shifting, but after using it alot now, I can live with it. Personally I don't like the gear spacing, they are just spread to wide or in the case of 1 to 2, to close.

That brings me to my next question--What parts are needed to tighten one up again, and are there any improvement kits available?

Got one in the 72 Blazer that I just picked up, but don't have it running yet. It is behind a 350 with a NP203, I believe.

I have an SM465 in my truck, the shifter just seems sloppy, is that how they are, or is there a way I can tighten it up?

Re: Anyone running a sm465?

I agree with everything above but wanted to stress that if you want great acceleration, that 2-3 shift will usually let the ricers whiz past. I had a 465 behind a VERY torquey small block with 3.08 rear and 33x12.5x15 tires and I could outrun nearly anything in 2nd but that was it. First gear is actually good for getting a big load,,(ie.a trailer) started. I like my 435 much better than the 465 as it has better ratios and similar strength.

Re: Anyone running a sm465?

Not a Cheby, but I run one in my Willys Wagon, wedged between a SBC283 and a twin stick D18 with a Warn OD. 16 forward gears and 4 sticks FTW!!

Trans is tough as rocks and almost as smooth.

It's a 4spd.transmission that came on the custom campers. It is called "NP435CR" which means New Process 435 Close Ratio. With a 3000 lb.camper the low and following gears are just right. Low is 4.56-1 so if you are empty you start in 2nd,but 2-3-4 are just right IMO.It is a VERY strong unit. However, it is still essentially a 3spd with an extra "granny" low for heavy loads. So it is not the ideal trans. for real good acceleration.Great for a work truck though.

Re: Anyone running a sm465?

Good point GMCBubba. Yours has a 6.68 granny low,3.34 2nd,1.66 3d.
It's about the same as the 465 with a slightly lower 1st and slightly taller 2nd and 3d. I didn't know those came in pick-ups,now I do,thx.
>> The Close ratio version has 4.56,2.28,1.31,1.
