newbie rearend question???

I spotted a 10-bolt 3.73 locking rearend at a local salvage yard. It is in a 86' chevy suburban 1/2 ton 2wheel drive with a 4-speed automatic. I have an 83'gmc 1/2 ton 2 wheel drive with a 10-bolt 2.56 open rear end with a 4 -speed auto. My question is will this rearend be a direct swap,,,any differences??? yoke and all??? or will there be some minor mods involved???? they want $250.00 the rearend is clean and complete thats about all i can say or know about it. Is this a bad price??? anything else to check???

I'm pretty sure that it would be a direct swap. Is it posi? If not it sounds kinda expensive to me. I bought a 12 bolt for my '86 non-posi with a 3.42 gear, brakes and drums for $75.00

Jeremy

10 for 10 it's failry simple. Of course you will need to re calibrate your speedometer after the gear swap.

if it's a stock rear it's more than likely a Gov-loc diff. Not known to be the best or strongest diff...

The best way is to remove the rear cover and see if it looks like this...

Yea but even if its a grenade lock you still got a good deal on a complete rear end with a much better gear set. Now before you go trying to lay down dual rubber marks remember all the peices in 72's pic like to explode when you abuse one of these, or get stuck in snow, or sand and lets not forget wet or icy roads.

For the average driver, in a 2wd truck there is nothing wrong with a Gov-Lok. In a 4wd, or standard shift truck that gets beat on they are prone to failure. I suggest changing the gear oil and enjoy the 3.73 gears. You might be able to sell your old rear end and recover some of your costs....
