Advice on steering column and shifter

Hey guys, I need some advice on either rebuilding or replacing a steering column in my 69 C20 w/ TH350. I currently have a straight column (non-tilt) with auto shift on the column. By the way, this all started from wanting to rewire the truck (which I haven't done yet). My turn signal switch is shot, need new canceling cam, bearing, safety switch, etc.

Is it better to just buy new column with all items installed, or try to rebuild? A new column might just set off the restoration (and probably my wallet).

Can I install a new tilt-column?

If I can use a tilt column, how hard is it to convert over to a floor shift, and what would be needed to do the job?

Anyone have any remove/replace threads or info?

Thanks for your help.

Re: Advice on steering column and shifter

I would just replace it with a tilt column.

Was thinking of doing the same thing to mine once I get to this point.

Here is a link to just one vendor.

http://www.classicparts.com/1967-72-...ctinfo/77-141/

And their description:

Add the convenience and reliability of a new column built specific for your GM Truck. This steering column is not a universal column that requires modification of your original vehicle to install. Simply remove your old column, saving your original under-dash mount, as well as the original floor mount. Install your new steering column in place of the old. Although it is recommended to replace your original rag joint if your original is good it is a direct bolt on to the new column. A wiring adapter is included with this column for the original harness. Add an aftermarket wheel and the griping surface of the new wheel will be in the same location as the original. Also includes knobs and handles.

Good luck.

Re: Advice on steering column and shifter

The new after market column will be a good way to go if you have the money. The non tilt are not that hard to rebuild. If it needs a new shift tube it will take about $150 in parts.

Re: Advice on steering column and shifter

Thanks. Has anyone converted their steering column from automatic column shift to floor shifter? What's involved? Also does anyone have any steps on removing the original steering column and reinstalling a new one?

Re: Advice on steering column and shifter

I ended up installing an Ididit tilt column and Lokar automatic shifter (Nostalgia model). Worked on it last winter. Very happy I did. I put in the chrome column. Looks great. The Nostalgia style shifter really sets it off too.

Re: Advice on steering column and shifter

That's pretty neat. I would go with one of those Ididit columns, but I don't have the money to afford one. I also can't seem to find any of those van columns in Pick and Pull, as they don't last long if they are in there. I just said "screw it" got the column out of the same '84 Burb that I got my seat from. Has anyone worked with those? I can't seem to find any info.
