Just got my Steel rims powdercoated...what do you think??

Hey guys, I just got these steel rims powdercoated in a flat black. These were the rims that were on my truck when I bought it. I'm not sure if they're original or not. Anyone have any information on these? I chose flat black because I'm going for that look all over.

I like them. The flat look looks good. Update some pics once you get them on your truck.

Those are later style 4x4 rallye wheels. I believe they were most prevalent in the mid 1980's.

I just had a set powdercoated gloss black for my truck.

Re: Just got my Steel rims powdercoated...what do you think??

Thanks Suspect. I definitely will. I'm trying to figure out what rubber I want to put on them now. I really have no idea. I wanted a lower profile look but I'm not sure of size.

I had no idea what era wheels they were from but instead of scrapping them and buying new I thought why not just get these refinished and then if I want a set of chrome rims I could just get those in addition.

Good plan. Recycling is always good!

I hunted for a while to find a nice set for my truck. I really wanted the wide steelies that take dog dish hubcaps, but I haven't been able to find any. So I settled for the rallyes. Last couple of pics in my build thread show them on my truck.

Re: Just got my Steel rims powdercoated...what do you think??

Steelies look good on these trucks I used to run them on mine just because and would swap the trim rings out and run the OEM full wheel covers for more of a sleeper look. Nice thing was I could always change the look by just removing trim rings and the center caps stayed on. When I got sick of the look I could put the rings back on.

Re: Just got my Steel rims powdercoated...what do you think??

Not sure what truck you have, but those are 73-87 Rally wheels. More then likely they are the 15x8 rim. They take a center cap and trim ring. They have approx 4" backspacing. I just sent a set out for powder coating to use on my 70 K10. I have white steelies that have about 3" backspace, which I really liked the look of, but since I added a 3" lift, the backspacing pushes the tires out a little too much for my taste, so I'm going to sell the steelies and planning to run the rallies.

Here's a couple of pictures with the steelies (that I'm going to sell) and the rallies (that are out for powder coating).

Re: Just got my Steel rims powdercoated...what do you think??

Did you have any issues with the welded area on the rims after powder coating? I've heard that sometimes the powder coating bubbles in this area because they can't get all the impurities out of it. Even if they bake it before paint they sometimes have problems. Any close up pictures of the rim weld?

They look good! Hey not to thread jack but...I think my steel wheels are originals on my '67 but what about the hubcaps? I like 'em whatever they are.

Just my opinion here, but that bad boy looks so much better with steelies than the Rallyes!

I agree for sure. The problem is the backspacing on the white steelies $uck$. They are original pre-71, 3-nub wheels made for drum brakes and the backspace is only 3". There's a big difference in how it looks up close with a 1" difference in backspacing. I would like to buy some 71-87 steelies with 4-nubs (for hub caps). Those have 4" backspacing, which would be great.

Re: Just got my Steel rims powdercoated...what do you think??

I think you would have done better to do them gloss. One,to break up the flat black. Mostly number 2,they'll clean up and stay clean better. Even Hot Rod Flatz sells a paint with more gloss for wheels to go with the Flatz

Re: Just got my Steel rims powdercoated...what do you think??

I really wanted to do a semi gloss or even a flat black but the powder coat guy gave me a decent deal on the gloss and then he also put a clear coat on it so it makes them so shiny it's almost hard to look at them. I have not put them on the truck yet so I am unsure about how I feel about them..

Re: Just got my Steel rims powdercoated...what do you think??

Hey thanks for the replies guys. I didn't get them back yet because I'm out of town for work. I'll get them back this weekend. Once I get them on the truck I'll get some pictures posted here.
Does anyone have tire suggestions? Do you guys run wider in the back?

Re: Just got my Steel rims powdercoated...what do you think??

I had these done a month ago for my 2wd GMC, just stock steel wheel for 71. Want to give all a heads up if you go white. The seams where the rim meets the center held the blasting material and now I see rust forming ? Bummer ! Black Wheels I don't think you would see it.....

The first set of rims I took to one place there was still a bunch of beads left in the seam. He said that was the best he could do. I thought they looked lousy so I sold them.
Got another set and took them to a different guy. The current set came out so much better. He also told me to put a layer of wax on the wheels, especially on the seam, and that would prevent rust from starting.

I was told by a powder coater that on the Rally wheels, there can be issues on the weld seam after it is baked. Apparently, the baking tends to pull impurities out of the weld and it could bubble along the seam. Hopefully that's not the case on mine, because I just sent my rallies out for powder coating.

These wheels got powder coated in '91 and looked this good when I sold them two years ago (21 years). A good place can do them right

Mine turned out nice with the powdercoat. I don't think they actually bake at a high enough temperature to do anything with the weld.
