The other day I ran into an old freind. We got to talking about our vehicles and I had told him I was looking to fine a set of 3/4 ton axles. He told me that he had a truck with a busted tranny and trasfer case sitting in his yard. I ask him what he wanted for it and his reply was, "If I could find some one to pull the motor out of it they could just have the rest of the truck". I told him I was his guy and today we pulled it to the shop and went to work. In about 45 minutes I had the motor out. I Got the axles out tonight ad found that they have 4:10 gears in them. I do have a question, how do I tell the difference from a 3/4 ton and a 1 ton rear? The brake drums just look a little big to be 3/4 to me. I am guessing that it is a GM 14 bolt but not sure how to tell the difference. It does have 14 bolts around the cover and the penion bolts in from the front too. If any one could help I would appreciate it. I took pics with my phone but it wont let me send them for some reason.

that is a full floating 14 bolt rear axle, same exact thing is used in 1 ton trucks, you can run 44" tires on that axle without having to worry too much unless your doing serious rock crawling. As for the brakes I have no idea, 3/4 tons had pretty big brakes themselves.

The front axle should be a 10 bolt or a D44 with 8 lug outers.

no difference in the rears, the fronts have 2 small "ears" on the bottom of the pig for a 10 bolt, the 44 doesnt have these, and both are retained using 4 u bolts. if the axle is retained by 3 u bolts, and 2 bolts, your score just got a little bit better.

Well I looked a little closer today and the front is a Dana 44. Are these good fronts or are the GM 10 bolts better? Also are the u-joints for the rear the same for the 14 bolt as it is with the 12 bolt I have in it now?

The dana 44s are comprable to the ten bolt that GM makes. IMHO the 44 is better than the corporate 10. Congrats on the score of the axles. As far as brakes go, the corp 14's came with 13" rear drums, and I believe also some came with 11".....but I think the ff 14's have 13s......also, pull the cover on that rear pumpkin, see if it has the factory limited slip or another type of locker. If it is a factory piece, you can get rebuild kits for it and they work pritty good.....
