Been having issues with my Quadrajet adorned 350, so I took it off to do a rebuild and during initial condition inspection I found a hole in the left side of the carb body. Has anyone run into anything like this? Casting flaw... machining mistake? Though I was never looking, I never noticed it there before and it was only this last summer that I started having driveability issues, ie, the engine loads up and dies at stoplights cold or fully warmed up.

This hole seems to open up from the outside of the carb into a little reservoir just off the left side of the float bowl. Tried to take some pics with a flashlight shining through the hole from both ends. What can be done to repair this? Is JB weld impervious to fuel? Is a new carb body my only option? What is your wisdom?

i can't answer your question, but your second picture has me laughing uncontrollably. Now THAT's funny.

I the hole into the carb body from that hole in the area marked roughly machined hole? Is that not a tube of some sort pressed onto that hole? could it be as simple as replacing or placing a tube of the right size into that hole to keep the outside world from your carb. Also could you not smooth the casting flash on the outside a little and mix up a little epoxy type repair maybe even gastank repair putty and try that. I would say go get another carb but I have one submerged in a bucket of kerosene right now trying to get the throttle plates to open from where the truck had sat out in the open and water had ran in the breather into the carb keeping a little moisture in the carb body. So if I am gonna try some thing out in left feild before bitting the bullet when somebody aska for advice I can't just say chunck it and go get a new one. Now if that doesn't work yes then it is time to go carb shopping. Jim

I've used JB Weld successfully in carbs. If it looks like a casting problem (I've never seen it before) that's what I would try.

Forgot to mention: JB Weld is what I use to seal the well plugs.

The Carter brand of quads from the 60's are well known for casting problems!
GM had a problem producing enough Rochesters for production(probably union trouble),so Carter was used.
