Too much oil pressure?
Did a lot of work on the old girl this week. On my neighbors recomendation I installed a high volume oil pump while I had my pan off. Now I have too much oil pressure. Is this bad? What could happen with too much press and how likley is it to happen. It is at the top of the guage at idle Either way I can't fix it for a while the wife is done with me working on the truck. Am I going to blow somthing up? Cause I am gonna drive her.

Re: Too much oil pressure?
I think with a high volume pump and a stock pan you might suck the pan dry if you really get on it hard. I might be wrong, but I'm pretty sure I've heard that before.

Re: Too much oil pressure?
Ide start by getting a oil pressure gauge thats full sweep and seeing exactly what numbers your hitting .
My 400 sb ran a high volume pump and stock pan and never had a that problem but 50lb pressure was about as low as it went and it would idle at around 75lb until warm I always kept it under 82 lbs. |

Re: Too much oil pressure?
Just a thought (rare, I know), don't those high volume pumps come with 2 different pressure springs? (wait..... that's a question)

Re: Too much oil pressure?
Okay, for each 1000 RPM's, you need 10 lbs of pressure. Now, my school bus will be sitting at almost 0PSI at an idle. That is a worrisome thing, for me. However, I've been told that it has a high volume, low pressure oil pump. I reckon that's a good thing, because I have over 70K miles on it w/o any oiling problems.

Re: Too much oil pressure?
I can't see how with a high volume oil pump you would starve it on oil. All the oil is running thru the engine. Now if you were doing serious stock car stuff, or drag racing, then you would add a larger oil pan capacity. Just can't see anyone on the street doing damage with a high volume pump on a street machine even under extreme conditions.

Re: Too much oil pressure?
I've been running a high pressure pump with a stock pan for two years now with no problems.
