Fuel Filter Empty in the morning!

This has happened 4 times since I've owned the truck. Approx 3 months. My Driveway angles downwards into my garage. So the truck is parked on a slant most times. The Truck turns over very strong and cranks and cranks and cranks. When I pop open the hood the clear fuel filter is empty. Even tho I crank it several times, the fuel doesn't seem to make it to the filter. I use my generic pump and connect it to the filter. A few pumps and the fuel gets to the filter. Reconnect and fires right up. Don't see the issue for a few weeks.

Truck Info - GM 350(Old), New Carb, Intake, New Fuel Lines-Filter, New Behind Seat non-efi Fuel Tank. No obvious fuel leaks in the line that I can find.

I'm going to change the fuel pump out because it's the only item left in the system. Does the mechanical fuel pump have a valve that would maintain fuel pressure when the engine is not running? If so, should I be able to suck the fuel thru it without cranking the engine. Any input would be awesome. If the new fuel pump solves it, I will eventually post a follow-up.

Re: Fuel Filter Empty in the morning!

Change the pump. The pump has a check valve in it that is apparently bad. One way to test this is to loosen the gas cap at night for a while. What is happening is during the day the tank pressurizes due to heat. At night it cools and the fuel contracts, thus sucking the line dry.

Don't use glass fuel filters. They're a fire hazard.

I might be oversimplifying this, but have you tried giving the gas pedal a pump or two before turning the key? It makes a big difference for me when I do that.

You say you have a new carb but don't say what it is. If it is a quadrajet is there a filter in the carb inlet? They also have a check valve in them that keeps the fuel from draining back to the tank.

Re: Fuel Filter Empty in the morning!

If he has a Quadra-bog chances are the primary metering wells are leaking down over night.

Re: Fuel Filter Empty in the morning!

Ya I def pump the gas a couple times lol.

The Carb is an Edelbrock 1405-600cfm.

It's a plastic fuel filter from Orielly.

I will try a new pump this weekend and see if that cures it.

I work in maintenance for an airbag manufacturing company, and intermittent issues can suck sometimes. As long as I can see fuel in the filter it starts in a half crank every time. Thanks for everyone's input.
