Anyone in to boating? New project for me...

Today I just acquired a Starcraft TR 150 boat. I don't know what year it is. I'll get the registration when I pick it up Friday. It is a 16' long tri hull, has a 50hp Mercury, and was cheap. It needs some work, but overall it is in good shape. I plan on having my Dad and family help work on it, and we'll all enjoy it together. Does any one have any info on older boats? This is my first one and am just picking up things on them as I go. I've been on many boats, but never owned my own. It'll be a fun experience.

The seats aren't too bad, but it will need some work on the storage areas. The PO also has the front cusions in his garage at another location. Hopefully they are as nice as the seats. I figure we'll get it running, clean it up, and go test it out.

I love the side buffer/bumper thingys on the trailer (yeah, technical term). It looks like it would be impossible to pull it out of the water wrong.

Unless I pulled it real slow and perfect out of the water my old boat would slide to one side or the other.

I've always heard the 2 happest days with a boat are the day you buy it and the day you sell it.

As long as the transsom not rotted you should be in good shape.

Re: Anyone in to boating? New project for me...

You definitely need to check for rotten wood. That era of boat was built using a lot of fiberglass over wood. If there's any soft spot in the floor there could be problems. Fuel tank- clean it out and check it for leaks!!, If there's no rot or tank leaks then work on the motor, but remember the you should not run ethanol fuel in it. New fuel will ruin the old rubber lines and gaskets, plus other problems. Oh, and make sure the fuel tank is not fiberglass, the new fuel eat up fiberglass. Been a big problem around here. Not trying to dampen your spirits, just been around boats my whole life... But when working, they're a lot of fun!

just so u know boat = bust out another thousand
starcraft is a well built boat but if u are out on any rough water the trihull type of boat will give u a bit of a hard ride
looks to be prob a 70s year boat to me

Re: Anyone in to boating? New project for me...

Thanks for the tips Custom1970!

Yeah, I've always knew these things could be a money pit. When ever I get it home, we'll check it over some more.

Sweet boat Brian!
