Custom Trailer for my Buggy

The trailer I've been using to haul my Sandrail is big and heavy. It was much more than I needed. My fuel mileage was very bad as a result. I really felt the need for a change.

I built this from what was a tent trailer. It weighs less than 600 lbs. I narrowed it, lengthened it, and relocated the axle. The fenders are hand made from 16g. sheet metal. It's decked with 3/4" tongue and groove plywood. It's size, and balance specific for the buggy, but I'll be able to use it as a utility trailer also. It's also small enough to fit in my shed with the car on it

There are several sand dune areas within 250 miles of me, and a few within 100. It will be nice to not have to drag the heavy trailer around anymore.

The only parts that weren't recycled were some steel, the lights, and tires. I was able to put it together pretty cheap.

Nice work! I really enjoy going to LV..always something interesting going on, such as playing in the dunes.

Thanks D, It's too hot this time of the year to ride the buggy locally, but I am planning a trip to Coral Pink Sandunes in Southern UT in a few weeks. It's cooler there, and will take care of my sandbuggy jones for a while. Halloween is the first big weekend, and Memorial day the last around here.

I went to the DMV yesterday, and got new plates for it. It was cool to finally load it up to try it out. I tested it with about 20 highway miles up a pretty decent grade. I hardly know it's back there. It tows really nice. Just what I was hoping for. The real test will be with fuel mileage. I get a little more than 16mpg average on the highway with my 305 Vortech / 390 Holley / Saginaw 4-Speed / .373 gear combo that I'm running. I was getting just over 10mpg towing my other trailer. I'm hoping for a big improvement, because the recent price of fuel has kept me close to home.
